Allegro Vivace for Solo Keyboard (not really)

Featured Replies

Alright, so...

Hey, I like music and things.

I know the title says 'Allegro Vivace for Solo Keyboard', but I'm not sure it's actually playable, because of the chord at the end. (I don't play the piano.)

It's really short, in C major.

1. Techniques used

Not a whole lot... Because of my drastically limited knowledge of music theory, I had the bass play a broken C-C-B-B chord pattern through pretty much the whole song. (But I really did try to make the fifty-three seconds go by quickly enough, with the melody.)

2. How long it took to compose the piece

I think this took me about an hour, but I don't remember too well.

3. Structure of your piece

Like I said before, there isn't really any structure... Just the same thing, over and over in the bass, and a slightly changing melody.

4. Obstacles when composing

Just wishing I knew more.

5. Summary of overall piece

Seems like it'd be real fun to play, but who knows?

This is nice. It reminds me of some of the Neoclassical piano exercises of Stravinsky. You're right, some of the intervals make it unplayable with two hands. However, this can be fixed by altering the compound intervals in bars 5 and 6, that is, by changing the tenths into thirds. Also, some of the notes are not necessary in the final chord, as chords playable with two hands on the piano, with each hand spanning an octave, can sound very full anyway.

Best wishes,

1. Go to the library and get some books on music.

2. Take your time when composing. I rough out a piece at about an hour for each minute. Then spend hours more listening to it and fine tuning it.

3. This is what music is all about. Variations of themes.

4. Go to the library and get some books on music.

5. My summary of the piece:

I am a self taught composer. I read and try to learn all that I can. I listen to others music and try to see how it was put together. I think the piece is a nice beginning but could use a little variation in the left hand. Whenever you have a solo piece, dynamics become overwhelmingly important.

The more you write the better you will get. But try to put some knowledge into it as well. (This is something people tell me as well).

Again, thank you. I think one of my main roadblocks here is that I live in the middle of nowhere. The only library within an hour's drive of my home is more like an over-glorified magazine rack. I've been trying to learn as much as I can, and I think I may have actually secured a music theory tutor. (only $45 a month, I believe)

I'm hoping this will help me with what I believe to be my second roadblock, which is the fact that I have a hard time with the whole 'theme' and 'structure' and 'form' thing... The only way I know is just to write things as they come, and try and make them fit together (if they don't already). I think this is one of the main reasons my music isn't too good, and I'd be really happy if someone could help me out with that, or point me in the right direction.

(P.S. - I'd drive that hour(+) to get those books, but I don't have a driver's license yet...)
