My first composition

Featured Replies

Took me a long time to get currage to post... so here it is.

The piece is called 'tiny waltz', I wrote this on the piano while trying to learn how to write a waltz, then transferred to sibelius and arraged it for strings.

It's quite short, but it's my first attempt at composing something.

Here it is: valsulet.mp3

Be gentile with me :whistling:

Welcome!

For a first try this is very very nice! Very nice chord progression and harmonies. The melody is that type of melodies that stick to your mind and you can't let go. This is instinctive and I call it tallent. Not many people can create the melody that you created!

Some suggestions:

i. You did very well in having the melody moving along with the bass! Well done on that! However the whole thing could use a bit more counterpoint (independent movement of voices).

Think of it this way. You have 5 voices (5 strings: Violin 1, Violin 2, viola, Violoncello and Contrabass). The contrabass and the violin 1, are moving quite lovely with their melodic movement and everything, but the rest must be bored to death going: rest - note - note, rest - note - note, etc... for 30 secs.

ii. Another idea, would be to have the melody played by someone else, for example, the second time where the melody goes up, try switching to the violas and then the violins, to see if it sounds any nicer.

iii. In all, it seems to me that you took the piano part, and just divided the notes to the instruments. This is certainly one way to go about it, but a little more... variation wouldn't hurt.

As I said, if this is your first piece, it is EXCELLENT and very well done on you!

Keep writing, and have the courage to post more here. Hopefully all of us will help you get better, and in return you will help us get better, huh? This is what Young Composers forum is about. :whistling:

I agree with nikolas, this is a very nice melody, and and excellent first composition. I hope you continue to post your work as you develop, as it sounds like you have an awful lot of potential.

Keep it up! :whistling:

Not bad at all for a first piece. I don't share Nikolas' admiration for the melody but it is indeed nice (if a bit standard and predictable). Keep on composing, I'd like to hear something longer and more developed from you.

Much better than my first composition. Now go on and complete your next piece with the courage you gained on this thread!

hehe great first piece. It reminds me a bit of some of the scottish waltzes I play on violin. But seriously for a first piece this is outstanding. I agree with Nikolas' comment about the counterpoint but I think that that will come with practice. Well done.

Hello there cobru,

Nikolas has basically said everything I had to say; nice chord progression and a very nice melody makes this piece nice and pleasant. The downside, which Nikolas explain very well.

Nirvana comments that your melody is easy to predict; that is not a bad thing, it can be used to the songs advantage which you have done. You make your piece memorable, although having a similar melodic pattern in longer pieces is not recommended.

Why one doesn't get to annoyed of the 'loopy' feel that can be experienced is that it is short - the listener's interest is still there.

Nikolas gave you the tip about counterpoint - for keep the interest up. There are many ways which you will learn with practice, I want to however tell you that another good way to keep up the interest of a pieces is to have contrasts, harmonic contrasts (ex. major and minor) and instrumental (the melody can be played by many different instruments, doesn't have to be the on being 'highest')

Now, go and write you next piece with courage

The melody reminds me of something, i just don't know what...anyway for a first composition this is indeed good, keep composing!

maybe it is because the piece's melody is predictable for you, hence giving you the feeling that you heard it before.

I have experienced such moments, kinda scary

Yeh i think it might be that;)

Thanks everybody for your encouragement and advices... Yes, nikolas is right, I took the piano part and divided it among instruments and then tried to alter a bit to add some counterpoint (but I just started learning music theory and I'm not very skilled in that yet).

I will post more stuff, I have lots of ideas running around in my head... but for now, for my level of knowledge (and especially because I'm not a music student and I have a dayjob which keeps me quite busy), I can't approach bigger(longer) works.. I guess that will come, with time.

Thanks.
