CaltechViolist
OK, there are now threads dedicated to concerti for the two most commonly used solo instruments: piano and violin. What about other instruments? It's admittedly hard to compare one instrument to another, so feel free to name a few. I'll start off by nominating Walton's viola concerto, Richard Strauss's 1st horn concerto, and both of Mozart's flute concerti as being among my favorites. Daniel
I'm rather fond of Mozart's Symphonia Concertante for Solo violin and viola.
M_is_D
Mozart's Horn Concertos are really amusing!
Christopher Dunn-Rankin
I will keep saying: Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Orchestra - it uses every instrument virtuosically, both the section as a whole and the principles - including percussion such as bowed vibraphones and such. It's an amazing piece.
Chad dream eyes
I have to agree on that, even though I have only heard excerpts through amazon.com. I was stunned, her piece reminds me of Bartok with certain other flairs.
Matusleo
I will keep saying: Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Orchestra - it uses every instrument virtuosically, both the section as a whole and the principles - including percussion such as bowed vibraphones and such. It's an amazing piece. I concur, Higdon's music is very fresh and enjoyable. I've several works of hers now on CD, and hope to collect even more. But as for Concerto's for other instruments, my favourite would be Poulenc's Organ Concerto in G Minor I believe. I think it really represents the heights of Neoclassicism as well as the severity of the Sturm und Nacht Romanticism.
Thomas
Elgar's Cello Concerto - brilliant! :) Woohoo - no longer a starving musician!
Chad dream eyes
Congrats! now you will get big and fat! The cello concerto is pretty awesome. Any concertos done by Duke Ellington?
Musiker
What about cello concertos? I love them, especially Dvorak's and Elgar's. Amazing works. Concerto for Orchestra by Bartok is another great work but then I don't really know if i count that as a concerto piece or ochestral. Saxophoneislife
For the bassoon, I'm yet to find one that I'm too fond of. I however do like Weber's Concerto in F Major. For the oboe I'll have to go with Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D Minor... In fact it's like one of my favorite songs ever. It's amazing. For the clarinet, definately Mozart. The Adagio movement is simply amazing.
