sunset in the city

Featured Replies

hey all...

this is a bop head that I wrote a while ago. it is just a head, so I just use a rhythm section and a clarinet, but it could of course be played by any instrument, or any combination of them. this was before I had a very good grasp on bop, so the solo I put in the middle is kind of lame. however, the head is solid, I think, and I enjoy it. so, here it is. sunset in the city.

For bop it is good. Short. Do you plan on extending this?

I like this.

I especially like the clarinet part. I've been looking for some good practice etudes. I'm going to steal your clarinet track to use as a practice etude if that'll be alright.

Thanks!

as long as you only use it for practice, I'm fine with it.

as for extending it, it was meant to just be a nice short head that can be used for improv fodder. so I might, but I think it kind of defeats the purpose, you know?

Nifty!

I had fun playing along with it on my vibes, and I love that clarinet solo you through in there!

At first, it was kinda hard for me to tell where the end of the first head was, but by the end I figured it out.

That's all I want to do. I’ve been having trouble finding good clarinet etudes in midi format. I’m thinking of writing up a set of my own. I might get some ideas after practicing yours. I’m only just starting to learn the clarinet. I’m 58 years old and I just do this as a hobby. I have no intention of becoming a performer or even a composer for that matter.

This is all just a hobby for me. :w00t:

good stuff. it's always good to hear people like that around. I've been playing the clarinet for 6 years, and I enjoy composing. I hope to become a performer, at one point or another. anyhow, this is all quite off topic, so I think that we should just let people do more critiquing

If i May im going to open this MIDI on sibelius and study the composition, no plagarism will be done.

i want to see how the Bass is done

i dont understand the bass in jazz how it goes up and down rythmiticaly

I'll give you the sib file. it's easier.

also, it's just a walking bass line. I haven't put in the changes, and I think they are kind of hard to look up... look at the bass hand of the piano. actually, screw it, I'll write them in. Ill have it up in 2 seconds.

also, the bassline is just commenting on the notes in the scale, going up arpeggios, things like that. all in quarter notes. I'm not a bass master either, but a walking bass is easy enough to put together.

ok, here's the score, in sib format. due to lazyness, I stop notating the chord progression when it loops. also, remember, too, that this is just a head, and I simply used a clarinet because it's better than a sax :)

Nice tune....the length is fine - all you need is the head anyway.

It's a jaunty little tune - not terribly boppish though. It's almost too melodic; to get beboppy it'd need more arpeggiations, intervallic leaps, and such...

It's nice, it swings, changes sound fun.

:sadtears:
