Composition for Viola and Electric Guitar

Some thing I wrote recently. I think it took a few weks to write, but I certainly wasnt working on it all the time. It's basically A - B - A1 structure, and I was really trying to make the most out of my initial basic motivic matereal

Hi, there 920 (is it beats or breaths per minute?).

1. Original choice of instruments.

2. What a gorgeous score!

3. The melody has some nice moments, but it isn't complimented by the harmony...

4. The guitarwork was exceedingly unoriginal, both harmonically and rhythmically.

5. A great deal of doubtfully intentional parallelism.

6. Poorly chosen harmonies...

very nice piece. maybe some further variety to the guitar part might add more interest, but as it is the piece works very well. congrats!

Thanks for listening frantz and manossg, I was wondering manossg, what exactly do you find doesnt work in the harmonies and the way they fit with the melody? I mean to my ear they work, and yeah, I wasnt really follwing really traditional harmonic rules....

Actually, on that subject, I've been studying reasonably traditional tonal harmony lately and do either of you know at wich points rules like no parallel 5ths/8ves and so on began to be discarded? Was it around Debussy's time? Were those rules still adhered to in the Romantic era?

It's beats by the way, though I suppose breaths could fit too... whichever's most painful, really. :)

Interesting piece!

To be honest, I didn't get excited bye this piece from the beginning of. I didn't see it as much interesting before that place, but I think it is much because of the midi sound.

The part from measure 26-36 is very beatiful, I like it. Nice guitar work there :D The piece continue good, and it has a nice and proper ending for a piece like this (even if I can't hear the ending how it should be, I can see how it's meant to be :toothygrin:).

Maybe it would have been nice with a part where the guitar have something else, but that's just a maybe.

Thanks for the comments Niklas. I understand the guitar is a little repetitave, but I think it makes sense in the context of a piece like this. If I was writing a longer, more developed, more "classical" piece I wouldnt give an instrument a part like that. Actually, I'll post someting like that up soon.

As a guitar player myself though, I wouldnt mind playing a part like that, but that could just be me.

Look for example m. 5. This choice had me somewhat confused. The seconds go on for some time, so it becomes less unpleasant, but it still strikes to me as poorly chosen (not to mention parallelism). Plus, it contrasts with the melody in an inappropriate (to my ears) way. The same pattern is repeated throughout the piece, so...

Maybe to add interest to this piece, you could do some double stops on the viola or try to vary the guitar more. It just seemed a little bit bland to me, but I'm also a fan of using as many instruments as possible.

Personally, I wouldn't like to play that viola part, it's too simple for my taste, I would be somewhat bored.

It's a very repetitive piece, but I like it. I like the harmonies.

The choice of the instruments is very juicy indeed, I tend myself to choose strange instrument combinations.
