Surreptitious

Featured Replies

I haven't posted anything in a while, so I decided now might be a good time. This piece was written for a surreptitious moment in a game which basically means to take or steal with stealth. Any comments or advice are welcomed. Thanks you listening.

Usually I don't get into stuff that jumps in quick without an introduction of some sort, but with this it works well. I have now gone thru this 3 times and I am trying to come up with a suggestion as to how to make it better....Nothing jumps out at me. I like it the way it is... sorry I can't find anything wrong with it!!

I can easily see the stealthiness of the piece but not necessarily the thievery. But then what does stealing sound like?

Overall I think it does what you want it to do though.

Well Done

In US history I was studying the depression and there is this political cartoon from the Great Depression by Charles Loring Brace that shows some kids stealing boots from a store late at night. I was thinking of this as I made this piece. That should paint you a better picture of the thievery.

Anyway, thanks for posting and I'm glad you enjoyed it even without an introduction.

BTW; I read your post in 'Symphonic piece part 2' and I wanted to say, feel free to PM as well when you post a piece. :)

Yeah, I really dig the background noises. . . very video-game-y. I was thinking that it might be better with that track boosted a tad, but come to think of it, it's most effective with a bit of subtlety.

I've been meaning to comment on this for some time but never got around to it. This is pretty good. I can easily imagine this in a videogame and I don't really see any way to improve it. It portrays the mood of stealth very well without being cliche. Nice job.

Thanks. I actually tried turning it up high during the climax, but instead of increasing the velocites, I just raised it an octave and added a subtle delay. then I pulled out the concerto drums and the timpani. I was a little worried that it might be to intense of a climax for a stealth piece, but I think it actually made it better.

I appreciate you taking the time to post. I was trying to be a bit on the original side, but I'm just wondering what is cliche for stealth pieces?

Actually upon re-listen, your piece does have many of the same elements as a typical stealth piece. The pizzacato strings, the small little string volume swells, the use of woodwinds, and use of percussion. Upon realizing this, I'm not entirely sure what makes this one sound original while several other pieces I've heard that use many of the same elements sound cliche. So I can't give you a definite answer. I'm sorry.

Just out of curiosity, what exactly are those little background noises? I can't put my finger on it, but I think something similar was used in Halo 2.

I used a FM synthesizer gated and widened; osc 3 inv square with a phaser 100% wet and heavy EQing, but no cuts...

You could probably find preseted versions that come with some programs and beef it up via EQ and compression, but I don't know what the preset would be labeled as.

What do you mean..?

^ yeah, cause Uemastu is so much better.

:P

I've listened to a few of your things and I think its great for the purposes you have for them. This one in particular makes me think more of a Metal Gear Solid level than FFXII. Keep up the work, hope to hear more soon.

Kinda bleh. I like when the drums come in. The high octave string gets on my nerves. It does sound decent for the purpose but kinda boring and...kiddish? Sounds more like a fun house song...

Anyways, no crit, this just isnt my type of melody I guess.

I don't know what's wrong with children's music, but to each his own.

I don't consider this anywhere near one of my best works.
