Sonata for Piano and Cello (mvmt 1)

Featured Replies

Here is my first piece in quite a long time. It looks like the last piece I wrote was in January.

Anyway, this is some kind of piece for cello and piano, I'm calling it a sonata, though it's unlikely that I'll write more movements. It's a bit more modern that most of my other pieces, employing a decent deal of dissonance. The harmonic structures seem to pivot around perfect fifths, but I didn't (consciously :-) intend that.

I'd love to hear some feedback. All is welcome. I'm most interested in specific passages which might sound awkward or break the flow. I can't do much about the form now, but I can fix local-scale things. Oh, I'm not a cellist, so hearing about things that I've written that is either impossible or really really hard on the cello would be beneficial.

The score is my working score and mostly unedited: it needs more dynamics, phrasing slurs; I need to decide which hand is doing what on the piano.

Ok, let's begin with the score;

1) The violoncello should be above the piano in such a duet.

2) The cello uses the tenor clef, not the alto clef.

3) There are some collisions in the score.

The piece is certainly playable on the cello, even though some double stop sequences (although in fifths), as well as the staccato passages might prove to be a challenge.

This is no piece of cake for the cellist or the pianist, but it's a wonderful piece of music. I wouldn't say that anything breaks the flow, apart from the score and the obvious need for a live performance.

I'd love to see more movements for this!

Thumbs up and cheers!

Imo, this is a remarkable piece indeed. Your harmonic language is almost unlike anything I've heard before, yet remarkably to my ears is sounds wonderful.

From what I can tell you have an incredible ear!
