No reason glitches

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Here's something bizarre... I can record twenty instruments playing at the same time, with 2-3 effects on each, even with a mastering device in Reason 3.0

But when I go to sonar 6.0 PE, I can't record ONE instrument correctly! It ALWAYS have some glitches. Now, it's true that my computer is really really a dinosaur (P4 1,7Ghz... 256 Ram :O)

and that I use EWQLSO in sonar! (LOL, alright that's FAR under the recommended system) but why does it works on Reason?

How do you explain that?

I would imagine, but can't be sure, that the problem is not what EWQL SO is asking as requirements (which is already over the top for you, I think), but what Reason and sonar ask. It might be the case (but can't research right now) that Reasons 3.0 minimum requirements make it work for your computer, but not Sonar. Does this happen with anything else in Sonar? Midi wouldn't cause such problem, but what about some other instrument? (VI)

Well I don't have any more library, except the Reasons one and some soundfonts (and I don't know how to assign a sonar track to a soundfont :()

It's not the soundfont that you need to assign, but the soundfont player. find one that is RT (or is it VST for sonar?????) and you will. Or try any synth given in Sonar 6.

Reason and Sonar are completely different. The reason that Reason seems to run better then Sonar on your computer is because Reason works solely in midi. You said that you could record many tracks in Reason however, this is not true. There is no audio recording happening with Reason, it only tracks and records midi input. Sonar does record with audio as well as midi and recording with audio will eat up your computer's resources much faster.

Like EWQL SO, Reason can work as a stand-alone player or as a vst plugin. With Sonar, I think all you have to do is have Reason installed on your computer and Sonar with link with it through the "Re-Wire" function.

WaxyD: I think you misunderstood me, I know I am "recording" my tracks with a midi keyboard or a midi file... but once each midi file is assigned to an instrument (which are sometimes heavy... not midi), I can "record" the piece to have a wav file... that's the "recording" I'm talking about.

Nikolas: Okay, I'll check out with sonar's synths

Sounds like the same problem I'm having... only with NI Bandstand. :ermm: I thought I solved it, but it turns out I didn't.

Ok, sorry for jumping the gun. In that case you shouldn't have any problems recording midi in sonar unless you start to add effects while recording. I'm sure running EWQL SO with Sonar is giving you some problems due to its requirements. If the glitches (which I'm not sure are audio jumps or drop-outs) happen during playback then you need a faster computer. If they happen after you export the audio then you might want to try exporting in a lower media form (wave file in 16 bit for example) and convert it later.

I don't think the speed of your computer is a major problem, but having 256 MB of RAM does sound a bit on the low side if you are using EWQLSO. Symphonic libraries use a lot of memory. Also, are you having trouble with recording or just playback? If it is playback, you might not have Sonar set up correctly - it takes a bit of tweaking. Most people would recommend using ASIO audio drivers if they are compatible with your hardware. By the way, does EWQLSO even work in Reason? I didn't know Reason can use VST instruments.

EWQL doesn't work in Reason, no it doesn't support vst instruments (argh!)

Well, I have problems for playback AND recording, but no instrument drops.

And I have not yet tested with sonar synth instruments (I'm gonna do this next week only!)

In that case it sounds like Sonar is not set up correctly yet for you. For best playback you will need to use either WDM/KS (Cakewalk standard) or ASIO (Steinberg/Cubase standard) drivers, and not the MME drivers (they are usually too slow). Usually you will have to fiddle with buffer sizes to find the best setup for your sound card or audio interface. It might even turn out that your computer doesn't have a great sound board for music production, and to get the best performance you may need to buy an add-in card. For the best advice on these issues, ask on the Cakewalk official forums.
