My (real) First Song, Urban Night

Featured Replies

Since the last time I uploaded a song it sucked terribly, I will upload this. I might add something on the end to make it better, and I will be adding some drums, since I only figured out how write for them an hour ago.

Anyway, this is my first song, entitled "Urban Night" it's a techno song, and i guess techno is like electronica, if not, please move this to the correct forum :)

I had the idea when I was playing "GT Pro Series" (terrible game) on my Wii, the soundtrack is mainly techno music so I thought "Hey, I should try to write something like this." I am sick right now, and was home from school, so I sat in front of the computer for 7 straight hours writing this. My first song.

So far what you hear is unedited. The chords at the beginning suck.. so i'll probably remove them.

Please post any comments, and critique (good or bad) as much as you can. I want this to be a good piece.

Thanks and Enjoy!

EDIT: I don't have a score of it, i don't know how yet to convert Rosegarden files into PDF files. sorry for the inconvenience.

EDITING THE EDITED: I just heard the song on a frien'ds comupter, who has a real sound MIDI card thing, and the bass line sounds a little wierd, so if it sounds the same when you hear it, it sounded better when I wrote it on my Dad's computer. On mine and my friend's and on my laptop it sounds wierd. Just the bass line though.

hello?

sorry if I sound impatient lol..:P

Hi Smartyy

Techno/electronica isn't really my thing but I will try to comment. First of all, I agree with you about the starting chords. I don't like them - maybe you could try some different chords there? Secondly, you had the same bass line pretty much throughout the whole song!! I know a lot of techno songs can be like this, but I still think it helps to vary the bassline at least a bit. Otherwise it sounds like a 1 chord song. And my other complaint is that it went a bit too long (I only got up to page 7 of the midi file out of about 16). But I do think you had some good ideas there. I like the rhythm of the bass line and some of your fast lead runs. Maybe it would sound better if you added in some drum beats. What program did you use to write this? If you have a decent sequencer you might be able to load up some software synths and use them instead of just midi and change around the patches and synth parameters - this would give you some variation and make the song much more interesting. Once you have worked out which synths/drums you want to use you could export it to mp3 rather than midi. Sure mp3s take up more space, but general midi sounds cheesy sometimes.

Thanks Finrod

I did end up adding drums to it, but my Dad was working on the computers when we lost power and also all of my songs.. The drums did sound good though.

Anyway, I used Rosegarden on Ubuntu Linux to write the song, and I don't know if i can/how i can export it as an mp3.

Where can you download the synth things you were talking about? Also, what is the Parameters thing, I know that Rosegarden has little things you can use to adjust them, I just didn't know what they meant, like the Pan Volume and stuff lol..

Thanks again for the comment, I'm glad somebody finally listened to it :)

The synth plugins are usually called VSTs or VSTis... there is a ton of them available at KVR: Virtual Instruments, Virtual Effects, VST Plugins, Audio Units (AU), DirectX (DX), Universal Binary Compatibility - Audio Plugin News, Reviews and Community Most VSTi synths have heaps of parameters on them, which are settings or knobs which affect the output sound. If you change some of these during a song you can get sort of a "morphing" effect which you hear in many techno-style songs. But I have a feeling that most VSTs don't run under Linux (although some might). You will at least need a sequencer program which is VST compatible. If you also have Windows, I would suggest trying REAPER (google "reaper sequencer"), which is free to try (and only $40 to register). There are other programs around, but the majority of them are more expensive. Most of them also allow you to export to either .wav or .mp3 format too. Hope that helps.
