Song of the Dreaming Forest.

Featured Replies

This is from the Heart of the Beast soundtrack. Song that brings the Dreaming Forest to life and causes all of its wondrous creatures to come out of hiding. Mystical, magical, enchanting and mystery is what I wanted to convey.

Pretty spot on if you ask me. My only criticism is that it maybe sounds like some other forest/fantasy themes that I have heard in the past. Was that a solo viola coming in at around 1:50?? Particularly liked how the music built up towards the end and got "darker". Oh, and is Heart of the Beast a computer game or a movie?

Heart of the Beast is a story I am currently developing into a graphic novel, and hopefully one day a feature film.

Thank you for listening to it. It was a solo violin actually. And yes, I did gradually want it to get darker and more mysterious as the creatures were pouring out of the forest. Can you tell me some of the other forest themes that sounded similar?

Thanks, Finrod.

Hmmmm, I can't remember the specific pieces that sound the same. I have played a few fantasy computer games and some of them had similar "forest" themes in their soundtracks - not exactly the same, but alike in mood. I think it was more just the style of the beginning of the piece - especially the use of flute and light strings. As your piece went on it became less familiar.

nice piece, I liked the theme a lot and the build up at the end. One thing you might want to try to make it even darker would be to move the main theme around a little bit more, it seems to be primarily in the flute and bassoon, until the violin comes in towards the end. Another thing you could try is working with some dissonances within the chord progressions, I hear some suspensions, but I think to make it even darker and exude that idea of beasts you could add some harsher dissonances. Overall its a nice piece.

Thanks, Kendall. That is an interesting idea I can play with.

Thanks all. Could I get some other opinions. All of the non musicians I have shown this to are really blown away and amazed. I would like to be able to have someone articulate why this is. I am still a beginner and would be good to get another viewpoint on the piece. Thanks.

That always happens to me.... non-musicians think I am Mozart himself! :P People with knowledge of music on the other hand often think my pieces are grade 2 standard :D

I enjoyed this piece and I thought it fit very well with your description. Sorry, I didn't comment sooner. I've been too busy to do much more than just check in on this forum occasionally. Anyway, this is a very nice and atmosphereic piece. I felt the melody was repeated maybe a bit too much but there is enough variety to keep it from getting too repetitive. Nice job! One of my favorites from you.

Interesting. I seem to get a mixture of both. Some composers I know in real life are amazed with my ability to compose with out knowing how to read music and composing by ear. Yet, others seem to find fault with it, which is fine. Cant please everyone.

Very nice.

The melody IS amazing! Nice orchestration too.

I really hope you get to use this some day.

I am conflicted. Part of me thinks theres a bit too much repetition whilst the other part likes the way it establishes itself. Maybe towards the end try using some more prominant counterpoint so there's something esle for the ear to follow, or just transform the melody to give it that variety.

It's, again, hard to criticise though. You've done another sterling job here...for some reason I havn't heard too much of your work. I'll be sure to keep an eye out in the future
