Shostakovich Symphony No. 10

Truly exciting 2nd movement, from Proms and Dudamel conducting.

A great symphony, one of the great pieces of 20th century in my opinion (and the opinion of Von Richter, where I got the link from).

Enjoying it? I sure am! (feels like a dru ride or something, that's why my post sucks so much... :blush:)

Supposedly, the scherzo is a musical portrait of Stalin - imagine that, music that describes pure evil!

Listen carefully for the composer's own little leitmotif: D - S (Eb) - C - H (B natural). It's sort of a "yeah, you're dead but I'M STILL HERE :P" to Stalin.

This is really one of my favourite of Schostakowich's symphonies. This one and the 14th.

Last year I got to see the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra perform this. Also my Favorite from Shostakovich. At the end of this movement I was on my feet clapping before I remembered that at this hall, they do not applaud until the end of the entire piece. Stupid stupid stupid!!!!

For a small town, our symphony does an amazing job and is slowly becoming know as a great symphony.

Somehow or another, the notes in this movement are supposed to spell out dead. Refering to the death of Stalin. I forget how though. I don't remember if it was in this one as well, where he spells his name out also.

As I said before Nikolas, fast women, fast cars and fast music, so you can easily see why this is one of my favorites.

One of the symphony orchestras at my college played this next to a prelude of his [shostakovich's] in Eb and then Prokofiev piano concerto n.1 and Rimsky-Korsakov piano concerto in C# minor. Talk about an excellently Russian concert. My piano prof was the soloist for both the concerti and the symphony was awesome. After the second movement, you could hear everybody just gasping for breath.

That truly was quite metal.

I realized that it was not a tribute to a man he hated. When I said I forget how, I meant to say, I forget where exactly he spells out dead. I was told this by a Professor of music ( Dr. Rachel Franklin) who does pre-concert lectures concerning the music to be performed. She teaches music at a college in Baltimore,Md and is very knowledgable about these matters.

This symphony owns!

Oh my, I have to say this is amazing. I didn't care for the conductor's facial expressions, but he must have done something right because this was a great performance.

So so cool.

Actually a metal band has done a cover of the allegro, funny that you said it sounds like metal cuz it really does.

Anyway, Shostakovich is one, if not my favorite composer, just love this symphony!!

I really dig Mekong Delta (I have known about them for years), but I had never heard this cover. I was too busy listening to their Pictures at an Exhibition cover album.

That one is on their new album.

We adapted part of that second movement for our band field show. Metal indeed. I've actually fooled around with putting together a metal adaptation of it...
