Piano Concerto no.1 - II

My amateuristic attempt to write a piano concerto.

Second movement is a sort of prelude/intermezzo to the third movement where I use two motives in presto tempo (190 for an eight) one in 5/8 and one in 6/8:

"Do re mib si sib" in 5/8

and

"Do re mib si sib re" in 6/8

The ending part is using the same chords of the beginning but then in a faster tempo. Harmony based on Dutilleux, Rautavaara and Bartok.

The third movement should be something like Ginastera's bombastic style piano concerto.

(There is also a harp and horns in it, but I didn't write those in the score yet. The string orchestra is playing a bit unconservative too. Don't mind the time signatures...)

It's quite interesting musically, but there doesn't really seem to be material for an actual concerto here.

Is this an entire movement? It's terribly short, and not overly pianistic (or rather, it contains very little music of overt technical difficulty).

I like the music very much, but as a concerto, I think there's a HUGE amount of work to do on it. It's considerably too short to be really satisfying, it feels like the introduction of a movement and not an entire movement.

Obviously, the score needs a lot of work, so I won't comment on that for now.

I know, I'm only used to make songs with a length less than 3 minutes. You can make an analogy between writing a short report and writing a thesis. It takes too much time and devotion to be able to write the thesis. I wrote this short movement in one day. For me composing is more of a hobby, leisure so I'm not really into it that much.

Hell I won't even mind to write a piano concerto of 10 minutes.

BTW, what's the shortest piano concerto ever written? I know the longest is Busoni, unless you can give me another one even longer.

Hey hey, it sounds reall good! I love the harmonies. And the mp3 quality is good, what do use to make the mp3 anyway? Finale?

Just develop the whole thing and I think it can be a good 2nd movement.

But I agree that it doesn't really stand as a concerto, maybe concertante?

It kinda sounds like Holst and movie music.

I wonder if there are piano concertos for movie music. I know there are violin concertos written by movie composers like Korngold, but I've never heard of any piano composers besides Rachmaninov who made music for a movie.

I don't use finale, I use EWQLSO a soundbank combined with midi notation.

When I add a first movement and a second Scherzo movement I could really make it last 14 min long, good enough to be a real concerto!

Yeah the harmonies are very beautiful. The score was really hard to follow though. You should try and make a much longer version because I think that the composing is very good but the piece is very short. It sounds like it could be epic and last a lot longer.

So as I said this was going to be a piano concerto with 4 parts.

3. Largo

4. Vivace

Wow, this is coming along very nicely indeed. Some of the piano writing is brilliant, if more than a little technically demanding. Quite a lot of notational issues, but I suspect you will either correct these at a later date or not bother with them at all, given what you've said in this thread.

This latest movement is still very short. Why not extend it? Add a contrasting B section to produce an ABA structure, perhaps.

I'd really like to see you tidy these scores and think about variating the material to lengthen the movements. Some of your ideas are wonderful, and I feel you simply aren't yet paying them the respect they're due! :)

First movement:

Based on some parts of Barber Piano Concerto and Hiromi Uehara harmony.

And some movie music, I forgot which movie though.

After this first movement I'm adding a solo for piano to go to the second movement. This is some sort of Coda. I'll post it soon.

I based this music on a movie: I forgot the title:

It's played in the beginning of the movie, and the music is in minor, there is a piano in it that does the same as I'm doing with the eight notes here. It is night, dark. A car is riding on a road, there are mountains, trees. Then suddenly the car crashed (I think).

Now anyone who knows the movie??? Thanks.

Hints: I recall it's something from Jodie Foster, or hannibal, or insomnia... I'm not sure. I saw the movie a few years ago.

Edit: I found it!!!

It's "The Human Stain". A movie with Anthony Hopkins. That's why I mentioned Hannibal, and insomnia had also this landscape. And Jodie Foster reminds me of Nicole Kidman, also, Jodie Foster's movies have the same kind of music and intelligence.

So today, i felt the need to, and i stumbled upon your piece. I am a pianist, and so thats what drew me towards your composition...and boy oh boy was i amazed.

IM not really into the clashy chords of the 20th Century music, like, the music in teh style you composed...but i REALLY liked your piece.

Im going to attempt to play it...because it is amazing. Its short too.

Could you perhaps send me the full score...or upload it...maybe even a piano reduction for 2 pianos or something.

I played the andante myself and it sounded much better on the piano, so try it yourself!

And this is the cadenza supposed to be played after the first movement, as a prelude to the second movement.

It sounds like a hybrid between Prokofiev's Sonata's and Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit.

You can definitely hear the harmony in this piece which is also used in the first movement.

The chord clusters are a wink to the third movement.

The FF is a wink to the FF in the third movement and the FF in the first movement.

Good to know you've been thinking about "winks", or "thematic linkage" as others might put it. ;)

I didn't honestly find your cadenza very cadenza-ey, since it was rather technically undemanding and used only a limited range of pitches. You could make it more interesting by using a few different octaves of the piano and giving the performer a harder time.

Just a few ideas - it is true that it fits in with the mood set by the end of the first movement.

Hmm, yeah. I could climax the cadenza up to the speed of the Scherzo and suddenly accellerate the Cadenza to push it up to the trillers of the Scherzo. But I'm not in the mood now... hehe. I'll start a violin concerto instead.
