French Horn and Flute duet

A piece I wrote about a month ago. It's pretty much one theme with variations, together with motives quite different than the theme. Almost every meldies came to my head the same time.

I don't think I need to say much more. The star (*) means that it should be a quart tone under B, or over B flat. Finale doesn't play that :O :P

What's your thoughts about the piece? Hope you'll enjoy it

I really enjoyed this piece which has several fine melodic themes with some good rhythmic variety. Well done.

As it happened, I had just been experimenting with quarter tones in Finale 2008 but I haven't found a musical use for them so far. I managed to create the quarter tone adjustment you indicated - this is quite a striking and novel effect in your piece. A very nice touch!

For the SmartMusic SoftSynth, 2048 on the pitchwheel is a quarter tone. So one can create in the Expression Tool three new expressions for +2048, -2048 and 0 (to reset) to get quarter tone adjustments. You have to reset the pitchwheel to 0 at the next note to recover the normal tuning. If you then save as a mid file the changes stay in the midi file.

Horn? Yes! That caught my attention.

Hmm.... just some random thoughts..... I'm thinking that at 25 the horn would likely be covering up the flute.... consider taking the flute up another octave. It's a strong point anyways.

How you notate your quarter tones is a little nonstandard, try finding the correct symbols for them, I believe you can find them in among the other symbols in the articulation designer. I could be wrong though, I've never used them myself.

Fun little piece, seems like a sort of novelty, especially consider it's flute and horn, often thought as an odd combination. But you got it to work a bit, I tip my hat to you. I think you could go for more variation still, though, you could still accomplish a lot more with this piece and idea.

By the way... the horn is not French. :musicwhistle:
