Melankoli - for a very little ensemble

Featured Replies

I have made a little sad piece of music here. What do you think about it?

The piece is written for English horn, Horn in F, Violins, Cellos and Piccolo flute.

The theme is played two times, first time with the horns, and second time the other instruments.

To hear: melankoli.mp3 (I have used Finale 2008, and full GPO)

Melankoli.pdf

Just a few things that I saw.

1. It's a good piece, but rather short.

2. You wrote the English Horn up to a high E. Although that's not a difficult note to produce, it will most definitely sound weak.

3. at measures 19-20, your harmony is very static Maybe give that horn a more interesting buildup to the entrance of the rest of the ensemble.

4. In the last few measures, I got bored with the piccolo. I would like to hear an arpeggio or such in the last bar.

Formatting

1. I wouldn't recommend hiding empty staves on this score since it's so small.

2. Since this is a mixed ensemble, you can feel free to add a bracket around all the instruments. Doing this will make the score a lot cleaner looking, and will also focus the sound better when you use softsynth or GPO (it's one of those finale "features" that are sort of useless).

Good piece all in all. Consider some variations and using a fuller ensemble towards the end. Alex

I like the ensemble you have here and it sounds pretty, I just think you should make it go somewhere. I just feel you could have built up more on this rather than ending it so soon... makes it sound more like a cue than a piece.

But either way, twas pretty

Thank you for the answers.

I agree the piece is very short, and thats because it original was written for a scene in a movie, but it was not used.

After you comments I think i will try to work more with the piece and enlarge it.

Scene in a movie? So it was a cue...

I am sorry, but I don't know what the word "cue" means in this context, and my dictionary doesn't help me. Do you have another word for it?

Hmm... in the case I'm using it, short audio clip used to accompany a visual scene (like in a movie or in theatre). Often used to trigger an event but it can also accompany it.

...I spend too much time in theatre
