January 4, 200818 yr Hello, This is a preview of my first minimalistic piece "Community" It was highly inspired by Reich's "Different Trains" It is a song about how the internet has changed the world and the way we look at it. The first section is entitled "English" because what is going to happen, is that the same paragraph will be said but it different languages. I hope to do 6 sections all together. (English,Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, and Italian) I hope you enjoy it! You can find the MP3 Here: myspace.com/compositionsofkyleukes "With the internet, the world population is now one big community. You can be anything you want. The possibilities are infinite!" PS: I don't know why the MIDI leaves a break at the end or retards...please note that this is a computer error and not my decision thanks!
January 5, 200818 yr I do like it, but it is a little to similar to 'Trains.' Maybe there's a way, instead of layering the text on top of an ostinato and following it with a musical mimicry, you could integrate the text into the actual piece. It would mean adding a part for a singer, but I think it would make it more unique. :)
January 5, 200818 yr I actually found this not to resemble Different Trains all that much, aside from the central notion of the spoken accompaniment. I enjoyed the innocent, simplistic feel which allows the ear to gain gratification from hearing everything unfold. It's quite similar to Riley's In C and, on a rather different note, bits of the soundtrack to Sim City. The only question I would ask is this: are the instruments supposed to follow the pitches of the voice, as in Different Trains? I couldn't detect any mimicry; perhaps I'm going deaf. If not, it might be a nice touch. So would a live performance, to prevent those repetitions from sounding too robotic. Thanks for sharing!
January 5, 200818 yr Author Thank you both for your comments. Yeah a live performance would do wonders for this piece. The answer to your question is no, they don't mimic the speakers pitch. They do, however, mimic his intonation and rhythm. The reason why I didn't match his pitches exactly was because I found it hard to do that and stay in the same chord. But if people think it might be worth it, I will definitely reconsider. Thanks Again for both of your comments.
January 13, 200818 yr I cant really imagine a piece of music that would fit the meaning behind this better, I've never heard this "DIFFERENT TRAINZZZZ?" so I can't compare the two or anything but I do like this song, and I usually am not a minimalism fan, so hats off to that.
