Waltz in F Sharp Minor

Featured Replies

Ive only been composing for about a year, and all i've really written are a selection of preludes and short pieces. I heard a chopin waltz (i love all his compositions!) and decided id write my own (in Fsharp minor, as for some reason its the only key i can improvise in ).

I know this waltz is hardly a knock on any of chopin's, but its my first one and im unsure as to whether im doing it correctly. The left hand virtually plays exactly the same over and over again, and there's one point where i may have gone slightly over board with tuplets... but would some of you mind listening to it and seeing if im on the right lines? I know that there is a lot of tweaking to do with this piece.

Thanks,

(I appologise for the poor quality of the midi)

*Edit*

I've taken into account everything that you've all said and come up with a newer version. Ive transposed all of the left hand to avoid the corss overs and general mudiness in the melody - i think the melody this way is much clearer and sounds far better. I supported this change with some dynamics (I can't beleive i left them out lol >.<). Also, i've added another theme in the relative major - im unsure if adding it upsets the flow of the music, but it certainly adds some more contrast and variety in my opinon.

I've also corrected most of the enharmonic mistakes that i could find ;)

Thanks for all the advice you've given me :)

I've attached the new midi and PDF in a post further down the page.

this was good , i cant tell you anything about the romantic style,(its not my style)

but i have played some chopin on the piano and this sounds romantic, you could have one or two more themes in this on just for variation, and break the chords some times. Keep composing

I think that it was pretty good, but in order to achieve variety, you should probably break up the section in minor with a light-hearted section in the middle.

Ok thank you very much for the comments :). I'll write a major theme or two and add them to the score. Once i've finished i'll post the new version of the midi and score :).

Thanks again,

I'll go get my manuscript pad and pen!

There are some enharmonic mistakes... replace the Cs which lead to C#s by B#s ;)

Ok thank you lol ;) i always get confused when to use them on the sheet music

thanks,

I think it's a great theme. I could work great, yet as part of a piece. Not as the only feature. I curiouse to see what you make of it.

Yes, I think the piece would benefit from another theme/part. But what you have here is good.

But another thing: You don't write any dynamics. One of the things that my teacher keeps stressing is how important to a piece's feel the dynamics are. They give the piece life. This waltz does not have any markings, not even at the beginning, which gives it an unfinished feel.

When you live your dynamics they become an irreplaceable part of your compositions (unless you take a determined stand to not write any). Just wanted to mention it. :)

Its a good start. I agree with what others have said in the fact that you need some variety. Also, I dont know if you want those lines in the beginning to cross over like they are, that could be a problem. Also, the whole beginning sounds a little muddy becasue the lines are so close together. Just some things to think about. Good Luck!

Wow! Some great improvments!! I really like the new middle section and I LOVE the ending. I feel that between measures 1 - 69 is a little TOOO repetative, maybe cut a little shorter, or create even more variation. At 41 and 42 (and everywhere else it occurs) I felt this strong modulation with the B# and I think you can take advantage of that with changing the chord in the bass. Just a thought. Good Work!

Wauw the starting theme really makes me smile. When it's starts and when it returns. I like the dynamic changes in the middle/new part. Also i like the melodic/organic feel of the middle part. I fits/contrasts nicely with the main theme(A part). Although i think you schouldn't have to cut off the repeat of the A part. Just reapeat it in it's whole(can i say it like this?) Anyway nice little piece.

Thank you for the feedback :),

I've changed the piece again - I agree that the first section is boring, so added a new minor section (only about 8 bars on) just to stop the listener falling asleep :P.

While doing this i found a nice chord and ive added that to all the parts with the tied B naturals/sharps - i love those diminished chords!

Finally, you wer right in saying that the ending section should repeat the whole of part A, since it is, after all, the main theme. I've left it the same, except repeated the earlier bars of the waltz to help build up to the final section with the big notes in the right hand.

Hope you like the changes ^.^ ive made, i'll attach the midi and PDF below.

Thanks again everyone for the feedback i really appreciate it,

I think this is what YC is all about! Composers helping other take a piece and giving some suggestions and helping the fellow composer to make the piece 10 THOUSAND TIMES BETTER!!!

I love it. Great Job. You are hard work has paid off!

By the way, I went back and listened to the original. Man! Its a totally different piece.

Again, great job and congrats!!!

i liked...is a good work,,,the octaves are apassionatto...good effec

The new part is just alittle akward i'd say. Although i really like the way the main melody sort of sets it strait when it re-enters after the let's say the c-part. Yet it is melodicly a little meaningless. I think a few notes would make it beter. Try to fit in the high A/Bb ornament you use in the main part. To link it emotionaly. It's just a sugestion. Thanks for being suggestable in the first place. That's a great dispossition for anyone, but in particulare for a musician. I lake it, for that matter. If you make something new send me a PM, i realy like your unsuggesting style you gave this piece. It doesn't want to make you feel anything. It's just there saying it's part and having it's struggles and making it's sollutions. Great!

Thank you again for the comments :D

I could feel the awkwardness in the newer part and i think this was caused by a combination of the triplets (which i have replaced with two quavers and a crotchet) and the melody having a feel of wanting to continue, rather than just ending. Ive added an additional 5 bars containing some snazzy ornaments and what i hope is a slightly better melody than the first 4. It includes an ascending chromatic with mimics the descending one; i'm hoping it compliments the descending one.

Hopefully this should have cleared up most of the awkwardness, it would be a shame to have a wierd part in between the main themes.

Thanks again for the feedback and comments guys, this is my first piece i have put on YC but i shall definately be putting on more! (maybe another couple of waltzes to group with this one :P)

Thanks again,

Ive attached another midi and PDF, hope you like the part at bars 35-55 ;)
