The Forgotten Element...

Featured Replies

Hello!

Here is a small piece (around 2 minutes long) for piano and orchestra.

http://www.nikolas-sideris.com/cgempire/FEReverb.mp3

Simple form ABA' pretty much. No score this time.

Piano: Synthogy Ivory

Orchestra: EWQLSO Gold (not xp pro)

Enjoy :)

Nikolas

Is the name FEReverb stand for Forever Expanding Reverb?

For this piece it works!

This is very simple piece for the pianist, it almost sounds like I could play it; but it is very elegant.

I love the sounds you tweak out of the piano in this. The lower sections are dark and brooding and massive.

You once again have shown us how well synth'ed music can sound.

Thanks for posting this.

Very well done!

Ron

i really wish i hadnt listened to this in the dark....

 Oooh! I like this a lot. Very dark, and develops nicely. Also, as Ron noted, it sounds fantastic as well. If I didn't know better, I'd have to listen real hard to realize it's not live.

The melodic content is gorgeous - floating on top of that moody low-end.

Well done.

Very impressive work, as always, Nik. I particularly enjoyed the dynamic range of the piano, though the performance could have used a bit of tweaking because some parts sounded a bit abrupt in a not-necessarily-positive way, in my honest opinion.

I agree with Ron's interpretation of the piece as having a large and brooding feel to it, and I particularly appreciated the fact that you let the piano shine and really lead the tone, just assisting it with the orchestra.

I can easily see this as part of a soundtrack where the progression of themes becomes even progressively darker to the point where the conclusion features a prepared piano and that uniquely poignant sound, still enveloped in a more distinctly evil orchestral envelope.

But then I'm just conjecturing. In any case, this piece was a treat to listen to and a nice exploration of moods.

Thanks for sharing the great work!

I hear a similar thing...only where the piano part evolves into ... [whisper] improvisation. *looks over shoulder for ArcticWind7*

Perhaps even improvisation on a prepared piano! :O

Thanks for the comments everyone! :)

Ron: LOL! FE stands for Forgotten element silly! :p . I was heavily inspired by Ivory and it's sound which can sound amazingly great! It was a solo piano piece, before I decided to orchestrate it. :)

thatguy: Sorry I guss... ;)

Robin: At last you are starting to post in my own works! YAY! It can get a bit darker yes, if only the rest of the team would get a move on ;)

Marius: Can you define the problem with the piano? The piano was written on the piano roll and then changed the tempo map. If I was to put my finger up I'd say that it sounds a tiny bit mechanical and uninspired. But then again I did like those continuous arpeggios...

It is part of a soundtrack and things do grow darker, while exploring the same harmonic territory pretty much...

This piece is put together really well...

The way you mix the sounds makes the orchestra sound extremely realistic.

And of course the dark texture of the music is very effective!

Good Job.

What type of samples do you use?

Yummy, Niko!!

I love what you've done within the constraints.

The piano was a little muddy in the bass register. Too loud+too much reverb.

Otherwise, a great virtual performance, and good music!

:)

Danny: It is mentioned in the first post. Ivory for the piano and EWQLSO Gold (not xp pro) for the orchestra. I now, usually use Pianoteq for piano stuff, but Ivory also sounds very good. Thank you for listening and liking it.

Daniel: Thanks mate. I like the too loud bass, that's why I left it there. Reverb is the free version of SIR, which is usually a bit muddy and this was done a bit earlier on in life, so I wasn't too sure how to use it properly and add a bit of EQ as well. ;)

Thank you never the less. :)

Can you please post a score?

Hey Nik

Good grief this is freaking sweet, although I do have some comments

It seemed to me that at time some of the instruments other than the piano were a bit overpowering, but it might just be my computer. It just felt in some places (near the beginning and early middle) that it was a tad unbalanced

I especially like the overall mood, good consistent harmonies and textures

That's about it :P

I give it thumbs up

Can you please post a score?
I'm afraid that no, I can't. I don't have one or this piece. It was never in Finale, only in pencil and manuscript and then straight to Cubase. Sorry...

Will, Thanks for listening mate. I did enjoy the overpowering force that came from the whole work, so I left it that way. It's not a concerto for piano per se, so the piano is allowed to dissappear from the foreground, at least in my opinion. But thanks for enjoying it, never the elss. :)

how the hell are you so good at your musical craft? i will learn and learn and learn...i must learn from you

WOW! Thanks! (much obliged and embarassed).

Remember that I'm 30 years old and also a professional (which means that people demand of me) as well as fiinshing my PhD in composition... (no account on talent from ym behalf, I don't believe in it really, maybe for 1%). I be that when you end up 30, and have studied music you will be as good, or maybe even better. :)

Sorry, should have looked closer...

Anyway it's still a cool piece! You use the orchestra well.

...Sorry for posting this twice...Still not good at this forum stuff.

As with all your music Nik, I enjoyed this a great deal.

Care to explain what's going on harmonically in the first minute or so?

Loved it :D

Danny, no worries mate.

Thanks Mark. Care for a small exercise? If you can make out by listening (dict

Will do :)

*puts music on mp3 player and heads for piano, manuscript paper and pencil in hand*

Anything I should look out for, that might confuse me?
