Voiced Sweetly In

I'm a little nervous about this one. This'll be my first non-videogame piece that I've ever uploaded on Young Composers. I wrote this for my girlfriend for Valentine's Day. It originally was only supposed to be a small, mniute or less piano piece but after I started it...well let's just say I'm not one to leave a melody under-developed. :D

I was going for a dreamy, weightless feel to this one. I'm a big fan of Pentatonic Major scales and it really shows in this piece. There is also quite a few modulations and time changes. I will post a score eventually when I clean it up but in the mean time, all I can offer is an MP3. The piano is synthesized and I tried my best to recreate a free time feel and expression. There are some awkward changes in tempo that I still don't like but I really didn't feel like taking time to iron out all the small little details when I know how I want the piece to sound in my head and will learn to play it one day (when my piano skills improve).

Ten bucks to whoever can figure out the name by the way. :thumbsup:

Hey Tyler, you can tell you're a video game composer, you've got a certain style to your music that shines through here. But as a standalone piece it works very well.

At 0:30-ish there are a couple of grace notes you have in that are just pushed in for the hell of it. You have three in quick succession and whilst the first one works I don't think the others do. I also don't lie the trills very much at 1:24.

I love the rest of it. You have a beautiful and well constructed melody. It almost feels like a Piano Collections piece with the way it develops and I love the triplets towards the end, though I feel you could build on them just a little more. I'm not too sure about the end either. It works well but it's still going at 100mph when you finish it off, I think you should gradually slow the tempo as you near the end there just as more of a "warning" that the end is coming up.

Overall though, great piece of work. Very different from your usual work but not out of touch with the your style, which is what you were after I hope! Well done.

Hopefully you can get me the midi. As was said, there do seem to be a few notes here and there that are just after thoughts. Also in a few spots, it seems to be missing a note or 2.

For a first strictly piano offering this is great and you have no need to be nervous about it.

It does seem to be static thru out the piece though, very little dynamic changes, but my guess is that is also the soundset and is not your intent.

The beginning does have the dreamy, weightless feel that you were talking about. It has a couple of hiccups though.

Overall, though, a great start into the world of piano solos.

Final Fantasy X is in your vains at this point. This piece screams it. :P

I think it's touching and well thought out. The melody is simple, but nicely presented. Although there are some spots of error as the others have said.

I like the builds and the techniques you use to release them.

You could greatly increase the emotion in the piece if you worked on the dynamics. It would help make the piece more dramatic and emotional. A new sound library would help too. I'd like to hear this performed more though.

BTW, what did you mean by "Ten bucks to whoever can figure out the name by the way"?

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what did she think when you showed it to her..? :D

:) Thanks for all your comments. I've grown to not like this piece as much as when I first started it. But I think it's more problems with the soundfont, dynamics, and tempo than actual compositional abiltiy. It would ever be performed by a real person with real emotion, I think it would be much better.

And Bob, the name is actually an anagram. I doubt anyone would bother solving it though. And my girlfriend was very happy with it though she's not a big fan of impressionism. :P

Mhh, not bad, though it would be nice if you moved out of the pentatonics a bit.

And as said before, I don't think the trill works.

Very pretty!! It's really flowing and I don't know if it's just me, but there was a little "jazz feel" in some bits there. It's a little "questioning"...like you're not actually sure where the music is really going but you wanna keep listening anyway, but overall, it's awesome. :)
