Rain for piano

Featured Replies

Hallo friends,

do you like rain? I like it very much, I don’t mean storm now, but a calming, silent rain. Sitting at the window and watching I got felt moved to express it at the piano and this night I have written it down. It’s a sentimental piece, so not everybody will like it, but if you like such music, just listen and say me your feelings and what you think about my music. Its about 4 minutes long, in D-Major.

As usual I am posting the sheet music for piano and the audio files.

Dont hesitate to give me negative or positive feedback! :)

Nobody likes rain?

I liked it. It was pretty nice. I felt it could benefit from some extra dissonance and I felt it was a bit dragging in places. I'm not very good at giving constructive criticism for piano pieces though. The one thing I will say though is I didn't really get a "rain" feel to it. Well, there were parts I could see but for the most part I just didn't get the feel. Still a nice piece overall.

I enjoyed it. I can see where yo are trying for the feel of a light to middling rain and I think that you got there.

The one thing that I think it was missing and would help the piece out is a tempo change here or there.

Ron

Before even listening to the music, I have to comment on the messy notation. It's very off-putting, full of collisions and difficult-to-read changes from clef to clef...

On the musical side, it's beautiful and you should be proud of yourself. It has a dreamy quality and I easily imagined it as ballet music. The ms. 27-30 ruined the atmosphere for me, as too 'aggressive' and 'blocky'.

Cheers! I'm listening to it again!

Thanks for comments Nirvana69, rolifer and manossg!

Tempo change is possible for the interperation, feel free to play it as you like. I sometimes play the staccato part at higher tempo (and adding improvisation part after it to stretch the motive in a-minor) but I prefer the actual score :) The 'aggressive' and 'blocky' fortissimo-chord part might be disturbing for somebody, but for me its like thunder and lightning during rain, but not real storm.

It would be also interesting to write a storm, but there are no storms now, I must wait :)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with Nirvana. I don't think there was so much a lack of dissonance. You need to be careful where you place it. If you throw dissonance in for the sake of it, you'll get a weird piece. I thought the music was very effective. It's a simple style of writing (relatively speaking; it has some tricky parts), but overall I really like it. Very Neoromantic in a sense.

Probably my only comment would be the same along the lines of rolifer in regards to tempo, but perhaps more of a rubato sense here and there. Other than that, it's beautiful.

Thanks Matthew!

I also think that there should not be more dissonance, it would be a different piece :) Anyway welcome to this great forum!

Hi to all,

I renewed the links above, so you can download them. Feel free to comment.

i actually listened to this piece when you first posted it months ago. but was so obsessed with atonal music that i thought this piece was crap. not now!

i could imagine sitting by the window just listening to the rain. =)

i have to admit its a very effective piece and i enjoyed listening to it.

it had a slight sence of the dorian mode in the first few bars which i liked, as if it were in G major, but that's just me i guess =P

i didn't really like the Bb B natural at b.43 and elsewhere, it just came out too sudden, and (no offence) it gave me a feeling that you wanted to show off you could use that diminished chord.it just didn't fit in, probably the sudden change of rhythimic figure? i don't think it suits in this particular piece. (even if u wanted to, perhaps an A# would be more correct)

the thunder gave me a scare lol maybe you could perform it piano and soundtrack. =P nice work.

I did like this little piece. It has a gently-flowing mood where no disturbing hard dissonance is needed. Instead, the subtle passing notes on the right hand, over chord notes on the left (say the c#'s over the g's on measure 3), create the necesary sense of moving, without breaking the general static feeling.

I also like the A minor change in the middle of the piece. I would further investigate these color changes while mantaining the basic diatonic use of them. What I don't really get there is the stacatto thing. It provides a major moment of contrast, but it then goes nowhere. I find it weird.

Hope to be of help. I wouldn't care of it being "sentimental". I think you were being sincere, and that's what matters.

Paco

pd: Nice thunders;)

I loved the piece!, I really like the sound though it is not really my type of music (I like movie scores :) )

very well done.

I liked it, though I didn't get the impression of rain by listening. This piece makes a lovely mood and it's very restful. I would place the final chord an octave higher, and change some of the dynamic marks. Also this performance was perhaps too strict of tempo and dynamics, maybe a bit more rubato and dolce.

Sakvaka

The beginning makes me think of Alan Silvestri. I don't like this piece. I absolutely love it!

Edit: I have it on my iPod now, it travels with me, regardless the weather...

This was just lovely!

I know this thread is quite old, but great job! I thought it was executed very well, and I especially loved the forte Bb octave measures. It's no Jeux d'eau, but it's nonetheless quite reminiscent of a cool, soothing morning rainfall.

Thanks clarinetcola, I am happy that you have changed your opinion after months :) I personally dont like atonal music at all, or more carefully expressed: I dont understand atonal music :) so I can imagine that my music is at the oposite side. As for the chords you have mentioned, I dont want to argue what is correct or not, I didnt think much about it, I just like it that way I played it firstly. Anyway I apologize for scaring you with the thunder ;)

Thanks, I am glad you understand that this piece is sentimental, for me its a reminiscence of rain, I have to confess that I was firstly thinking I should not share this piece because as I improvised it at the very beginning I wanted just accompany the real rain outdoor sitting at the piano and this piece was simply born :) There was no big idea behind it, just the rainy mood :)

The stacatto part, its ment as the change of the rain color, but you can play it legato if you like, I dont insist on the staccato, play it as you want.

Thanks sakvaka, maybe I should not have tell the background about the rain not to control your imagination :) Anyway according to the performance, tempo, dynamics I give free hand to everybody :)

Thanks, I am glad you liked it, just in addition, it was an evening rainfall, but it doesnt matter :)

Very nice. You have me going around the forums looking for your pieces to download now. I'm very much into your style of music. I think you bring very fresh creativity to what I would call "Traditional Tonal Music".

In fact this is precisely the kind of music I've been looking for because sometimes I feel like it's difficult to bring freshness to tonal music. And like you, I'm not a fan of atonal music at all. To me, atonal music is for people who have given up on trying to be creative with tonal music. (ha ha) I'll probably get clobbered for that statement. ;)

I very much liked your Allegro for violin and piano in A-minor too. I'm going to download all your stuff and put it on a music CD. Would that be aright? Just for personal use of course.

I would love to get to the point where I could write a short piano piece that even vaguely resembles what you do. Not meant to emulate your techniques, but rather to convey a true sense of music. When I listen to your pieces I don't feel like I'm listening to something that has been mechanically composed. I feel more like I'm listening real music.

Don't tell the other composers that I said that. ;)
