As a cellist who regularly works on the Bach cello suites, I'd qualify Nico's statement slightly. While Simen can certainly afford to refine his work here, condensing and streamlining to better create an overall arch and direction, this is more than a baroque "bead necklace." I perceived a definite high point and direction rising and falling from it. There were "bumps" along the way: lulls in the motion at points (especially long 8th note passages in the last 1/3) and perhaps an overabundance of (good) ideas that lessened the forward motion. Already, however, Simen has crafted some style-appropriate sequences and given this piece a character enjoyable to the performer. Eliminating and refining would make the piece shine even more.

Oh, dear. Nico: forgive me; it was wrong of me to imply that you didn't know the Bach 'cello suites and also wrong to "discredit your remark," trying to recast your opinion as ignorant.

Just so you'll know--and hopefully this can correct this friction between us--I had no doubt you were familiar with the suites (I mentioned my familiarity with the pieces to lend credence to my opinion, not to imply that you did not know them), and I didn't intend my comments to be "discrediting" in any way. I chose to post mainly in order to provide encouragement for Simen, rather than a jab at you. I thought it would be a help and motivation for Simen to see my somewhat different (and totally personal) opinion about the structure and level of originality of the piece.

I will try to be more careful in the future about how I respond to other more experienced composers' critiques. Thank you for alerting me to my offense, and, once again, please forgive the injury. I hope we can continue to be good YC acquaintences.
