The Highly Educated Beast from The Oriental East

Featured Replies

Here's a little piece of "music" I made for a friend.

It's supposed to depict a Highly Educated Beast from The Oriental East. :w00t:

Can you guess the time-signature?

beast.mid

It's pretty fun, it could easily be a 90's platform game music :P I don't see, however, what's so "educated eastern" about it, and why you imply that oriental eastern beasts are not educated :|

>_>

But anyway, I fail to see how this is avant-garde... :X

EDIT:

Oh, the time-signature should be 15/8? or 15/16, depending on the tempo..

but what's the point of testing us to see the tempo, really :P

Haha..

I've done my job, I made you confused.. :D

The time sig is 10/8..

and I don't see how it's not avante-garde. How do you define avante-garde? :P

Well, I could write a piece with a time signature of 4/4 and make it sound like 19/34, but that's not the point of time signatures :P The pulse (i.e. the implied time signature, the one *we* hear) is 15/8.

Firstly, if you can't define avant-garde yourself (i.e. don't know what it is), then your piece is almost definitely not avant-garde :P "Avant-garde" literally means "front guard" in French, and was used to described the people who were in the very front of the battle field. In the Arts, someone who is an "avant-garde" artist is an artist who pushes the limits further, who "moves music forward", if you want a crude terminology.

Composers such as Stockhausen and Boulez may have been considered avant-garde back in the 50s and 60s, but I doubt many composers would be called "avant-garde" today (even composers such as Carter and Crumb, they are not pushing things any further anymore, they have stayed where they first stepped earlier in their careers - so back then, they were avant-gardists, but not now).

If you want to read a bit more elaborate definitions of "avant-garde", check: avant-garde - Definitions from Dictionary.com or even the wikipedia article.

Now, how does your piece fit in that description?

it a,,, sounds more like a

The Highly Uneducated Beast

Slow tempo,,,,,,,and mostly only 2 keys make the feel.

Just to clarify, this song is but an experiment and was made as a joke to a friend. :)

Yes, I still fail to see how it is avant-garde. In fact, it would be avant-garde 200 years ago (unless it was written for midi ensemble, in which case it would be :P ).

Perhaps I want it to be played by a monkey-midi-ensemble.

It still isn't avant-garde, and since you're not taking this seriously enough, this is the point where it stops being funny.

Someone just got Juji-fied  Yes, poor him, two months in intensive mental care

jeez.. Who the hell care if it isn't Avate-garde? And why do you keep pestering me about it? Just leave it alone if you're so annoyed with it.

*observes that Juji likes going around telling people that what they're writing isn't Avant-grade*

*Saiming pretends to be Juji*

It is Avant-Garde

This is pretty fun, some nice things going on. Its not really my style like at all, but overall it was fun and I'm glad I took a listen.

Of course it matters whether it is avant-garde is not. You posted your piece under this category, and since your piece is not avant-garde, it doesn't belong here, and a) it gives the wrong impression of what avant-garde pieces are to other people who don't know what avant-garde is (like yourself, as you have yet to prove me wrong) and visit this thread, and b) it lowers the quality of the forum itself, since other people do bother writing avant-garde music (or writing whatever they like, really, which *could* be described as avant-garde).

So yes, it is annoying. And it is most annoying to insist that I shouldn't care. On the contrary, you should care more.

Just leave it be.

Well it is electronic if it's intended as a midi file.

Juji, do you really think that the admins intended this section for people to post music they thought was breaking new ground? Then no one would post here, because they would seem arrogant. Yes, the term avante garde originated that way, but I'm sure the admins intended for this section to be for pieces that fall under the more generally accepted use of the term.

It's acceptable to use the term avante garde to describe a lot of things - movies where all the characters are 800 pounds, blank canvases in the museum of modern art, weird unnecessary independent films, and also things that are strange for the purpose of being strange. The latter is what Franzman meant, I think.

I don't see why it makes Franzman ignorant and passive to disagree or not care about your literary definition of the word Avante Garde.

What we see here is a clash of personalities, really.

I do not really want to go further into detail, since I respect Simon's wish. Let us just let it be :)

To Dan Gilbert: I've said many times that I do not approve of the "avant-garde/electronic" forum, firstly because of the grouping of two relevant but independent elements, and secondly because as a forum it is unique in that it attempts to characterise all works inside in terms of style, while all the other submission forums are about orchestration (major works, ensemble, choral/vocal, piano music, incidental music etc).

And as you said, I don't believe many composers from in here would be described as "avant-garde". What if I feel my music is simply normal music, and you feel it's avant-garde? Where should it be placed?

Which is why I insist on people submitting their pieces by orchestration, and not by style. Electronic music should have a category of its own, but avant-garde has absolutely no place there. It's just irrelevant to the rest of the forums.

To Gardener: of course it would be. But is it? :P

Juji, I agree with you there, but just because you feel this category shouldn't exist doesn't mean you should go around criticizing other people who post in it.

Well, if they insist on keeping the category there, then they should at least make sure the works that enter that category are qualified to do so. How would you feel if I posted all of my piano pieces under the Chamber music category (well, I play my piano in a chamber, that could be my argument), or my clarinet solo pieces under Major Works ("well, I worked on them for a week, and this is the most I've ever worked on a piece of music", could be my argument)? Even if I don't agree with a category, I have to respect that it's there and follow the rules.

And it seems that I, who like the so called "avant-garde" music as well as contemporary music, and who do not agree with the existence of that particular category, cared more about this forum than the people who naively post their works under this category, and pretend to be wise-asses by trying to get away with the vagueness of the term "avant-garde".

HEY!

I can edit otehr people's post! YAY ME! YAY being some kind of mod... yay!

Just discuss the piece at hand, will ya? This is getting tiring! It was moved out of the avant garde/ electronica forum, end of story. Let's move on... shall we?

Good call Nikolas. :)

That was highly hypnotic and stimulating.
