Hi frantz,

Just listened to your 'Romance' and first of all I made a little non-MIDI version of it (for a bit more pleasant listening experience ), which you can listen to HERE! It's an mp3, made with real instrument samples and I must apologize to you I allowed myself (and in a way was forced to it, because of lack of the right samples) to introduce clarinet instead of sax and cello instead of el. bass, I left the harph though. I must say I liked it a lot ... the fuge-kinda theme in the begining, nice contrapunctus,... you introduce each voice and develop it ... it all has this contemporary touch, where you need to listen to it few times to catch all the message ... which I did, by the way :) It's nice when you suddenly let the harph take over for a short moment and let the sax rest, I liked that. Perhaps in the mid and end part, the texture is getting a bit thick and all is loosing a bit integrity. I'd rather like to see it develop a bit slower and keep that pace, which you have in the begining of the piece, introduce harmonies, make them sound a bit longer so that the listener can get acquainted with it and then start developing it ... even go crazy in the mid part :D ... but anyway, that's just how I see it, just a personal suggestion.

You did a good job, it's an original and fine little piece. It could easily be performed during Warsaw Autumn Festival!:) (festival for contemporary music in Poland) You might decide to come back to it at some point and develop it ... or not :)

Take care, all the best!

woooooow, thank you Misiu, i feel honoured by your kindness in doing your own version of this little piece!!!! great choice of clarinet and cello, very very effective sonority in the mp3!!! i loved the atmosphere these instruments created. just i am not sure about the change in the speed you did, acelerating it... in the beginning it works fine, but towards to the end, where there are all those fast notes, the whole become a bit confused. anyway the mood became quite different all along, you turned it into a very dramatic (neo)baroque piece, with a powerful "sturm und drang" feel. i have to say that i loved this effect, and i have never thinked that a piece by myself could become so interesting through other's eyes!!!!

other interesting thing is that with the cello the harmonic texture seems to need some adjusts, which doesn't occur with the plucked bass - strange how a simple change of instruments change also the way we hear the harmony!!!!

so, i thank you very much for this wonderful version of yours, i was delighted in listening to it and surely i will revise some passages to get them more consistently shaped.

all the best my friend!!!!

ps: mmmm i don't know if it is actually playable... for a cello there are some too low notes in some passages, and i wonder if otherwise it could be performed by a double bass, because in other spots there are fast scales in octaves - i don't know if in a double bass one can handle that.... as many other pieces of my own i dont care about playability :P i just think on the music .... anyway.......

Hi frantz,

I must admit I didn't really think about the tempo. I opened the midi in Finale and assigned the instruments, and I must have saved it autmatically with the standard tempo, which I assume was set to 'quarter=120' ... so that is how your piece accidently got accelerated :D ... and by the way, I think it does sound better in its original tempo, you're right ... probably that is why I thought the mid part goes crazy etc. I shall make a new version and keep the tempo intact ... but that's tomorrow.

If it comes to playability ... well, I'm sure the guys in the Warsaw Autumn would figure something out :D

Take care and keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Misiu

:) ok thanks again Misiu! i reworked some parts and fixed some things in harmony and phrases and added more subtleness in speed variations, and changed the bass to cello. the sax remains because my clarinet is too much metallic, but you can change it again because yours sounds great.

think it is better now. regarding the overall structure i cannot figure now any improvement... i think it develops in a good way and i usually don't repeat any section after it has done its job, but who knows ... in the future i can think otherwise. so for this while use this new file, please, when you have time to spend on, no hurry at all.

and if you really think that there is any possibility for it being played in Warsaw it would be fantastic, wow!!! :D

cheers and keep in touch!

ps: any news about the contract for edition of your music?

Hey again,

So I did experiment again ... and this time came up with some new configuration, which makes your piece sound a bit more like a neo-baroque work. I used flute, harpischord and cello. You can listen to it here.

I tried to keep the original tempo this time. I listened to it again few times and I really like it, especially the first part of it, when everything develops, I like harmonies very much. I need to listen to the middle part some more... I hope I'll appreciate it more with time :)

If it comes to playablity ... some parts are out of scale, especially in the cello part, besides there are some chords in that part ... but perhaps it would be possible to play them arpeggio.

Well ... as I told you, it's a very nice piece and I enjoy it very much!

Take care my friend and keep up the good work ;)

Cheers,

Misiu

:ninja: by the way now it seems to me it is worthywhile to fix that unplayable passages in order to make it a "real" piece.......

Hey frantz,

Glad you liked it :ninja: You know you can right-click on the link to the piece above and then click 'save document as...' and you should be able to save it on your hard disk. The file is ca. 3.5 MB so it should be easy that way. If that doesn't work I can of course also send it to your mail.

It's a good idea to fix those unplayable parts... now you're just gonna start looking for a flute, harpischord and cello players that will put some emotions and real 'romance' into your composition :)

Let me know if you managed to save it, otherwise you'll get it in email.

Take care,

Misiu :D
