Adieus Overture

Hi, this is my first complete piece that I have written. It is scored for a Symphonic Band setting. I would love feedback. Sorry, the only recording I have is the extracted mp3 from finale.

Please keep in mind when listening that I have never taken a music theory course.

Why don't you explain the piece first. Everything in detail.

There really is no story behind the piece. I had a very short slow melody that I wanted to develop so I turned it into that.

I enjoyed this piece. I really enjoyed the slow part. This really felt like a band piece and would be fun to play. One sugestion, the transition from the slow movement and back again seems too abrupt. It was like cuising down the free way and then suddenly hitting a block wall. I think if you expanded the transitions alittle more making it gradual, not just in tempo but in dynamics, etc. I think it would sound better.

Good job. I would delve into there being way too much Bb, but you haven't studied theory that in depth, in which case I'm very impressed. Especially with the slower secton. Part of that is Finale too, the sample library on that program is pretty incredible now. Alas I am a Sibelius 3 user, so I get old sample libraries but [real] people can read my scores :-p Anyway, good job with your first complete piece. Now I think it's time for you to step back and work with a much smaller group of instruments to hone your control over your music.

i completely agree with gms. creating your first orchestral is a great personal accomplishment, but with your transitions i think it would help to write smaller works, especially to learn more of how the instruments work. if you look at my "untitled 16" posted here, its a mirror image on the problem with your piece (not that there is a real problem, just with the transitions i mean). ive written chamber pieces then and know more about groupings doublings etc etc. as far as your musical content, i think you did a superb job and i loved it. hope you stick around mate, cant wait to hear more of your stuff! :)
