Neither of the above examples sounded particularly Bachian, largely because of the melodic shaping. The seven-second example also had parallel octaves, which sound grating. Here's a short example of 2.5-part counterpoint that took me about three minutes to compose. It's totally generic, but I think it's slightly more idiomatic:

Zetetic, that is a VERY well written example of Bachian counterpoint. I like it despite its genericism.

It sounds very much like SimenN's characteristic neo-baroque style. He undoubtedly wrote it. And thanks for the compliments, healey. I try to write at least one short contrapuntal piece a day. Tomorrow I think I shall do something based on the first few bars of SimonN's composition above; it would make an excellent invention subject!

What's the point in technical exercises that don't sound 'melodic'?
