Piano piece in A minor?

Featured Replies

I've been writing this piece on-and-off for the past few weeks. It is about two minutes long, but packed with ideas (maybe too much at a time?). To try something different, I've taken a stab at a piano piece (not very experienced with composing for piano). I've heard that right-hand melody can get boring when they are only covering the underlying chords, so I tried my best to distribute the melody lines to remedy that.

I did write an preliminary ending, but tbh it kinda sucks:(. Also the dynamics aren't competely done yet. But you can find out for yourself :P

Any help is appreciated as I'm not sure where to go with it next.

The intro is interesting, but it is kind of poppish, possibly because you didn't use the harmonic minor in that part. At :31, there is no need to have sudden bass skips. I do applaud your use of chords, though. It was logical and interesting in most places.

In piano writing, there are rarely repeated notes to that degree, so the piece would benefit from less of that. I also applaud your use of the motif which you use frequently and develop it.

A complaint: I don't think you should have such long breaks at the end of each phrase. It is true that the arrival note is longer than the others, but not to such an extent. Try to create immediate movement after landing on the arrival note.

You have a lot of great ideas, but make sure that you don't have intense energy bursts followed quickly by large amounts of stasis.

Thanks. The reason I had that many notes on the staff was to make the chords deeper. Basically, with Notepad, since I can't mark dynamics or insert accelerandos or ritards (at least that I know of), I manipulated the score to make the playback sound like I wanted.

I know it's not the right thing to do, but since I'm limited to this program that isn't worth what I paid to download it, I did what I could (in many places I used triplets to slow down the pace instead of the ritards I so badly wanted to use).

So for now, disregard the score.

@Mael: By the long breaks, do you mean the section at 0:31 and around 1:57, where no instrument plays? Or everywhere I don't have movement, like at :47 and 1:42?

Any others?
