Featured Replies

Hey,

Here's my String Quartet in F minor ... I don't know yet, whether this will be the first movement or any other ... I kinda got stuck and would be very happy to hear what you think about it and where could I take it next.

Thanks in advance!

You can listen to the piece here!

...or on my homepage at http://www.misiu.dk/index.php?compositions

It's in an Album called 'Pieces for Strings'

Looking forward to your comments and suggestions.

Cheers,

I wouldn't be so hard on the harmony, Nico - not everyone follows strict Classical conventions. (Do I want to know what you'd say about my part-writing?)

From where you've left off, I'd definitely continue the pizzicato passage in series; since most of the melodic material so far has played off the initial motive, it might be a good time to consider bringing in a contrasting theme, possibly a single instrument introducing it while the other three continue the pizzicato? If the pizzicato passage continues the same way, you'd of course have to make sure the new theme meshes well with the old motive, which actually is a good thing as it becomes easier to develop later.

So far, you've been developing a pretty short, choppy motive, so if you start a second theme, I would suggest taking it in one of two directions: either virtuosic (and you can pass this from part to part), or lyrical with extended "singing" phrases.

Okay, it is 2:30 AM, I can't sleep, and I haven't studied for my 9 AM exam, so what do I do? I review your music!!!

I liked it very much. I didn't see any problems with your harmony - in fact, saying that "there are plentiful harmonic mistakes" is a very narrow-minded thing to do, you have to expect that from a musician who writes (wonderfully) in the classical tradition. I personally thought that the piece is rich with flavour. I loved how the parts conversed with each other throughout the piece.

I think that you could really develop your pizz theme as you progress with the work. I don't want to be a "backseat composer" here, so all I will say is that leading the way you did, the pizz strings could easily lead into a "louder", theme-oriented section similar to the introduction, but with slight variations for effect.

Anyway, best of luck - love your stuff.

Hi Everyone!

Thank you very much for your comments, both encouraging to go on with the piece and giving me some ideas and options as to how to take it to a next level. I'm glad you liked it despite all the flaws in my harmony :) I think that at the moment that pizzicato ending is rather temporary, I need to figure out some more fluent transition. I love the idea of both introducing a new theme with a single instrument and introducing some pizzicatos ... I also think it's a good idea to make some shift in the mood, make it a bit more 'rough and louder' and still use some motives from the initial theme ... thanks for those ideas, we'll see how it goes.

I was hit by some virus and currently lay in bed, recovering ... but as soon as I get better I'll get back to work.

Recently I've been listening a lot to Shostakovich's quartets, Debussy's and Ravel's, are you familiar with them? ... I love them and they also give me a lot of inspiration. Hmmm, how could Shostakovich become so popular with all those 'mistakes' he made in his harmony :)

Any other suggestions will be very appreciated!

Thanx again!

another wonder of harmony!!!! i do hope you continue in doing such terrible mistakes in harmony for the good of Music's greater glory. it is a so touching piece, a true music from the Soul!!! for me your music is like an epiphany of the angelic concert, a true panis coelestis, and i cannot stop listening to it. the flow of voices is stunningly beautiful, you create an unique atmophere, recalling some place very very distant and of most beloved memory, and you bring it nearer again, thanks for that!

i don't know exactly how to give advice on this piece, for surely you know your job, but maybe the idea of a pizzi transitional section is a good one, or giving pizzi to some voices and arched melodies to others, if you really wish to extend the piece. but i think the pizzicato works here as a wonderful and highly effective end too.

i think that it doesn't matter the size of a piece, if you say all you want to say with few bars that's quite ok! Webern wrote so small and notwithstanding so meaningful pieces! the way you build up the structure and the overall mood you get are so original that i guess you shouldn't care about traditional forms to your compositions, just follow your own musical wisdom and i am sure all will run splendidly. don't wish to match others' standards, you are already creating your own standard, and it is sublime indeed. keep it up!!!!!!!!

all the best to you my friend!
