Freewrite no. 25 for Oboe, Marimba, Violin, and Cello

Featured Replies

Every so often when I'm not working on a large project, to keep my compositional skills adept, I do a "musical freewrite". I define this as a piece I write in one sitting, trying not to backtrack too much. It's a hybrid between composition and improvisation, in a way.

Here's a freewrite I did for a rather peculiar ensemble: oboe, marimba, violin, and cello. It's two minutes long, and it took me about two hours.

Good job Luke! It flows very well and the rhytmic pattern you used is catchy. It's remarkable that you did this in two hours! The piece seems to take a different turn in a couple of spots but you get back on track right away - maybe you can expand those sections a little bit.

What a pants oboe sound, lol... but great piece. I love it. The imitation near the beginning's great, maybe you could use more of this? It's lovely and cohesive, and I love the instruments' complements. And when the strings start to bow, it's a lovely effect. Pretty amazing that you wrote that in two hours. How/where do you write?
