A small endeavor for strings.

Hello everyone!

I just discovered this wonderful forum and decided to start sharing my hobby with you guys.

To start with, I must tell you that I have absolutely NO compositional training. This being the case, I very rarely present my work before anyone who professes a knowledge of the subject.

This is going to change however. I've realized I need some hard-hitting criticism of my pieces, but more importantly, I need an audience! (an education wouldn't me hurt either;))

I only have a few "finished" pieces, with many others waiting to be completed if I get off my lazy butt. Perhaps joining the forum will be an impetus to do so?

Soap opera now being over, I'll attempt to post something!

I don't have Finale or Sibelius, but a can provide a primitive .mid file (is there a less embarrassing way to post the score?) and hopefully an Mp3 link. Here goes!!

edit: There should be a .pdf now instead of a .mid ;)

Hello.

Welcome to YC. And don't worry, plenty of us have had no formal training in composition (myself included, although that will change in 6 days).

First thing anyone will ask you after you post something like this is for a score. So I will be the first. Whenever you post, pleaseeeeee pdf score!

Now, piece. I like it, and you should see what you can do about getting it performed.

Without a score, I can say little, but...

I like your first theme and the subsequent answering in what I have to guess is a viola.

I find some of the sudden triplets a bit out of place...I suppose I mean not in the color of the piece.

This would serve well as a movement of a piece, it remains very engrained in your style you set up. Not too much dynamic or stylistic variation. But the whole thing sounds very nice. As I said, I like it.

Good job, stay around and keep gracing us with these pieces.

Cheers,

Brian

Glad you like it! The score has some dynamics, but I haven't taken the time to incorporate them into the midi file.

If someone would be so kind as to tell me how to put the score into .pdf format, I'd appreciate it!

use the search button..

The search button will convert my score?! Dude, that's awesome! :P

What he means is that you should search the forum for other threads on converting to PDF. There are tons of them, that's why people get sore about people asking.

Anyway, it's a very nice quartet. My only suggestion is that often the harmony is very thin, and it would be nice to have more growing, thickening harmonies.

@Dan: Could you point out some spots?

Greetings and welcome!

First, on notation:

1) The viola uses the alto clef, not G clef.

2) Bowings???

3) Instructions such as espressivo usually go below the staff.

4) m34, 2nd vl, diminuendo to what?

5) Dynamics throughout?

6) Some collisions should be fixed.

Second, on music;

7) nice and enjoyable.

8) I loved the pentatonic passages you employed at some places. They worked very nicely.

9) You tend to keep a lot of players waiting, almost all of the time.

Cheers!

@Manossg: Thx for the pointers! I'll admit that I don't spend any time arranging my scores, but I've never had to show them before. Don't worry though , I do know how;) Glad you enjoyed it!

:thumbsup:Hey m8 i enjoyed listening to this, although i must say i preferred your organ piece more :P

I know very little when it comes to strings, but i notice very little articulation aside from sticcato. Perhaps more variation of articulation could further improve the piece?

good piece
