Heya everone,

I'm new here but I've been composing for a while now :)

Just thought I'd show you what I can do, so here's a little something a wrote a couple of months back:

Not So Saxequential

Hope you like it :D

Any comments are appreciated

I'm not entirely sure this is smooth jazz (at least not the stuff I've heard), but it sounds nice. Almost show tune-y with a sax melody instead of vocals.

Different, but nice.

Agreed...this is quite removed from "smooth jazz" ...which is a very good thing.

Kal is right about the show-tune-y feel to it. What sort of feel were you aiming for with this?

Also, do you listen to much jazz?

  • Author

I listen to lots of jazz, mainly Charlie Parker, Johnny hodges and Duke Ellington :D

It was a GCSE composition, so I had to get blues in (3rd section), and then I just had to try and create contrast with the other two sections. It ended up being fairly show tuney, as (in order to submit it for marking) it had to fit in to one of the areas of study, so it ended up being slightly revised to fit in to "songs from musicals" theme:)

OK, not smooth jazz, but I'm terrible at classifying! What would you call it?

Also, I have a video of me busking from today, would you guys be interested in seeing that and maybe giving me some critique on my improvisation if I post it?

I'd call it a "show-tune" . The feel is certainly straight out of a musical, and it's quite removed from "jazz" ...especially smooth-jazz (a label to avoid at all costs ;) ).

Either way, it's not my bag, but it seems effective for what it is.. ;)

Also, feel free to post some videos...I'm always interested in hearing new players.

Thank you! Is this still the correct forum to post show-tunes in then O.o?

Oh, and I'll upload the video but should it to be this thread, or another  Sorry, too many questions

This forum is fine for your tune...

I'd say start another thread for the video...

That's disgusting. :P

How come that good saxophonists turn to smooth jazz? Where's the satisfaction?!

Sorry for the double post! But here's that video of me Busking today :D

Haha, it was raining and my sax was cold, so excuse my bottom notes

Haha..... Embarassing, but what the hey, improvising is fun =D

Haha, Mindi....I remember a couple of her tunes on the radio, until they got rid of the smooth jazz station here. Which I guess is alright, but now I can't hear EWF, Sade, Steely Dan,or anything remotely close to jazz anymore....

I'll check out the video when I have a faster-than-dial-up connection....

of course is not smooth jazz... it's just traditional

I loved most of it

sounds so Sonny Rollins or Scott Hamilton

but there are some strange arhythmic parts, that I don't really how to think of

but it gots nice mood, and it's a nice listen

There's me (on alto sax), a drummer, rhythm guitar, lead guitar.... Rhythm guitarist also plays bass.

We know some standards (Blue Bossa, autumn leaves, canteloupe island, watermelon man, song for biblao), some bebop (Parker stuff mainly), a little swing, and a few random others, but we're quick o learn most things :)

Here's a bunch o' tunes I think a great for newer players...there's swingers, ballads, modal, straight-8th latin tunes... Most are not too challenging.

Lemme know if you want to hear any, or need leadsheets or whatever.

:)

  • Author

:D Wow! Thankyou very much

I'm familiar with a few of those, but I'll be definately be checking out the others

It'll give me something good to do over my summer break

Oh dear, do I sound that noobish? XD I'm not that new to the sax, I don't think I'm what you'd call a new player :) haha, just new to the whole gig thing :D

Sorry if that came off condescending - I didn't necessarily mean 'new' to playing saxophone ... I meant 'new' to paying jazz. ;)

I like your piece overall. Very fun and light. A few of the piano transition seemed a bit odd to my ear but overall it was nice. MIDI saxophone is awful, of course, so perhaps you could record yourself playing this? If you don't want to record, perhaps other saxophonists could help out. I have three horns and could help out once I have a bit more free time.

Cheers,

Nate

Haha, not at all, just didn't want you to think I was a beginner :D

I would love to have it recorded properly, my sax is a student basic, with an unbranded plastic mouthpiece meaning I can't get a very professional sound (hopefully soon to change if I can earn enough) so it would be great if you could help out! Just message me when you get time :)

Haha, sorry everyone, don't mean to double post

Here's a recording my band and I did today of Blue Bossa

The balance is terrible (not my doing XD), but it was just done in the school recording suite :whistling:

Feedback/comments/critique are all apreciated and noted ;)

If I tried doing something like that downtown, I'd get shot.
