the best sax sounds

Featured Replies

I know the known world has yet to make a sound that does the saxophone justice but what is the best program out there that comes close? Garritan has the jazz/big band and concert band products but those seem to be the only things i can find that have saxes. I can only find orchestra products. Help me find some?

I realise this thread is a bit old, but I thought I'd reply anyway. I have found some good sax samples in the form of soundfonts.

See this link for a quick piece I did to show you. Yes I know the trumpet sounds fake, but listen to the SAXES!

If you are still interested, I could find the place I got them from (legally and free) and/or give them to you.

Free sounds that are legit and legal? Now I'm interested but... what's the catch? Also, the sax samples you cited don't sound all that great. Pretty "MIDI-tastic" to my ears. Perhaps it is because I am a saxophone player- but I've found saxes are one of the hardest instruments to create decent samples for. I think the reason for this is because so much of the music saxophonist player are extremely heavy on nuances and inflections in playing style. I have yet to find any saxophone samples that sound halfway convincing or decent- except for say the Broadway Big Band that is WAY too expensive ($2500)... at least in my humble opinion. :)

Big Fish Audio has a library called First Call Horns you might want to look into: First Call Horns

So you don't like them so much? Here are some nicer 'recordings' of what they can sound like. But I realise it's almost impossible to satisfy you if you play sax - I know that from my own experience (not on sax though).

Round Midnight

Moanin' (beginning cadenza doesn't sound so good, it doesn't quite suit the sax, but oh well. I'm a piano player)

These samples are hopefully better... I think it would be possible to get them sounding really good if you spent some time (which I didn't :) )

But I'm sure that for some instruments, it's easier just to record someone live than doing it digitally.

Sorry, even these other samples still come off very MIDI to my ears. There are already better samples out there for saxophone sounds that give better results. I'd check out higher quality samples and see what you can come up with. Of course, the higher quality samples will cost you more cash most of the time.

Find a way to tweak the samples so that the attack is not consistent for every single note. Players never attack notes consistently in the same manner. This should help the very MIDI sounding nature of what you've got.
