Hi

i am a 15 year old composer from Israel, and I'd like to hear what do you think about my works:

1. After 2000 Years of Diaspora:

(a). symphonic performance:

(b). youth orchestra (wind) performance- world premier: YouTube - after 2000 years of diaspora

2. Capriccio in G major for solo cello and orchestra:

Hope you enjoy

Dor Fischer

EDIT: I've attached the scores. please note that a cut have been made to the Capriccio at the actual performance.

It would have been nice to have a score to read along with, but anyways...

I have only so far had time to listen to the first piece (the symphonic performance of it).

It's a really, really nice piece. Beautiful melodies and harmonies.... a really emotional piece. I also especially loved the use of varying styles to contrast from one another. You did a great job with that one.

Also, nice job conducting!

And I envy you... being able to work with an orchestra.... it must be amazing.

Keep up the great work!

EDIT:

I had time to listen to the capriccio piece, as well, and absolutely loved it! Very nice use of the cello. Being a cellist, I really appreciated the way you used it so expressively... nice job!

before i start commenting back, as you can see- I've attached the scores in PDF format.

second, I'm glad you liked them.

let me tell you about that night, when i got the concert with "After 2000 Years of Diaspora" was a night i will remember for the rest of my life. never was i so nervous, and never was i so red in color...

but strangely- when i was standing there, on the podium- i felt like i returned home. it felt like a familiar place.

anyway- the main thing i want to say to you, and who ever else who will read this post, that i am mostly self- taught. i started experimenting with finale back when i was in 6th grade. and i heard your pieces, and i must say that you have potential. just keep experimenting all the time, because not only conducting is made of a hefty dose of experience.

and i hope to get better on conducting.

thanks for commenting!

Hi again Dorfischer,

Seeing you conduct was inspiring! I would also like to conduct one day!

So far, I have only been playing the cello in the orchestra.

thanks! nice to hear that :-)

Absolutely wonderful!

I watched/listened to 'After 2000 Years of Diaspora'. Very expressive and well constructed! I had to applaud with the audience; at your age this is a major accomplishment!

The music had a very "Gustav Holst", color.

Well done!

You should be very proud and post this everywhere!

Michael

I feel that the work for solo cello and orchestra misuses the soloist simply because of how it's orchestrated. Though it could be a particularly loud orchestra in the video, I think the work is more of a Capriccio for Orchestra (with Cello Solo) - which, for all I know, might be what you were looking for.

Just some thoughts I had.

thats very interesting to hear... we play a lot of Holst in our wind orchestra (in which i play percussion..). i like Holst ;-)

your right: i was looking for a concerto for: solo cello and orchestra.

BUT

it really is a combination of my unfamiliarity in writing for a solo instrument, and the lack of rehearsals we had.

thanks everyone for commenting!

Well, I can't say I'm not impressed. Why is it that the self taught teenagers with zealotry for music that write the best compositions and make the best music? No fake expensive-teacher-fed-six-year-old "prodegy" here! I liked the pieces very much. Didn't love them, but they aren't truly to my tastes. But I liked them a lot. The clever use of Hatikva in the 1st piece was smashingly good. I loved that part. I think both were a bit on the short side, esp. the 1st one which could have turned into "Ein Heldenleben" for Israel. The 2nd one didn't need the soloist, to be frank. It was in the vein of Capricio Italien and others. I think if the little solo parts were incorporated into the full orchestra and some brass was added, you'd have a bonna fide crowd-pleaser, and we all know that those are the money-makers.

Another sentiment I must share is that conducting is the hardest thing in the world! I've done it with my own works, and it's terribly hard to do right. Many people conduct every day and do it wrong; the ones who do it right are those that we should idolize. Neither you nor I have reached there, but we might, one day.

We have more in common than I thought! I had a simiar experience when I was on stage in Avery Fisher Hall when the New York Philharmonic played my piece. While I wasn't conducting it, it was still a sight, and sound, to behold! It was the best experience of my life! Amazing stuff.

Good luck and I wish you well on your future compositional endeavors! Keep it up!

Bravo!! lol

firstly, Congradulations on both the performances and the conducting.

Secondly, I really enjoyed these pieces. I hope to see more of your work in the future ;) lol. "After 2000 Years of Diaspora", in the end, left me wanting more, but in the best way possible.

Lastly, all I can say is that I am going to take a good, long look at your scores.

P.S. I loved the musicians clapping in unison behind you at the end of the first video. lol

first, I'm glad you liked the whole thing... i hope that this won't be the last time it happens....

well, I'm hoping that i will start to learn conducting next year, with my wind ensemble conductor.... (btw justin can you PLEASE post an mp3 of "Explosions Of Joy"?...)

and last but not least:

Well, I can't say I'm not impressed. Why is it that...

no one has ever remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty

de von Ausfern- schplenden- schlitter- crasscrenbon- fried- digger- dingle- dangle- dongle- dungle- burstein- von- knacker- thrasher- apple- banger- horowitz- ticolensic- grander- knotty- spelltinkle- grandlich- grumblemeyer- spelterwasser- kurstlich- himbleeisen- bahnwagen- gutenabend- bitte- ein- n

Dor,

Explosions of Joy is attached as a PDF. The mp3 can be found here: Explosions of Joy.mp3

Note that this is only a synthezised recording done by Sibelius. Some of the explosion effects are missing as a result. I recomend listening while following the score to place them in your imagination.
