Piece for violin in A major

Featured Replies

For my new project I'm working on a violin concerto.

At present, I only have a few basic ideas down in the violin part, but I'm having real trouble finding direction and fleshing the ideas out (I'm sure we've all been there ), so I was hoping somebody could help me develop and finish the solo violin part before adding orchestration.

Please don't be to harsh, this is a work in progress, and as a begginer composer I don't want discouragement, just critique :)

Violin Concerto I.mid

First of all, I would definitely try to carry both the soloist and the "orchestra" at the same time. I don't mean to actually write it all just now, but to have some two staves reduction sketch so you have your violin part in its proper context (rythm, harmony, and so on). That way I think you'll have the necesary space to move yourself confortably, and coherently.

If you find yourself in a block trying to develop your ideas (as we all have more than once, and many will still do for much time, I'm afraid...), I'd say: analize what you have written, your motivs and its transformations so far, and then proceed systematically and abundantly, looking for all possible solutions for a single problem, then select and go on working from there. It's like laying some thousand eggs -some will be worth.

It is something Schoenberg sugests that has helped me sometimes. Hope it's of help for you too...

I'm not a composer either so don't give my critique any merit. ;)

Just as a causal listener I think you have some really good stuff in there but as a solo I think its lacking continuity in spots. However, if you're planning on adding other instruments it could have a lot of potential.

In fact if that's your plan why not go ahead and start adding some other instruments, maybe as you add them that will inspire you to do more with the violin.

Do you play the violin?

Thank you for the advice so far guys.

abracadabra- yes, I do play violin :D I love it, but saxomophone is my main intrument :)

I will post updates as they come to me, there just hasn't been enough time for composition lately XD

As another question..... I'm having trouble adding orchestration with out overpowering the solo violin part- any suggestions?

Can you pot a score at all please?

well I would first recommend writing your orchestra part (on a piano staff), THEN orchestrating it.

not orchestrating it as you write it

So, building up the basic outline on a piano staff then applying different timbres/ thickening the texture?

I've only written orchestra works before, never with a solo part, and I'm finding it difficult to get the desired effect.

can you post a score?

Erm.... I can try =S I'm not sure how. Would a scorch file do?

I have no idea what that is actually, but if you can upload it, I shall see if I can open it.

Basically, whenever I am writing for multiple instruments I generally do this,

I would say write the music then attempt to orchestrated it.

Oh, well, I managed to save it as a jpeg if that's any better =)

 Please be kind when you look at this, remember this is just notes and I need some advice on where to take my basic ideas :D
