Explosions in the Sky

Featured Replies

Recently, I've been getting into a genre known as Post-Rock. At first, I scoffed at the idea and expected it to just be more generic rock (which, suffice it to say, I've had my fill of) but I was actually surprised. Not only did I like this type of music but it was strangely reminiscent of my own experimentations in the rock/metal genre. It was a type of music I'd been searching for my whole life but never thought existed. Needless to say, I'm enjoying some of it quite immensely. But there is one band in particular that stands out to me in the genre.

Their name is Explosions in the Sky. They are an instrumental band from Texas with three guitarists (though one also plays bass for certain pieces) and a drummer. Despite the limited instrumentation and lack of a vocalist, they provide some of the most emotional music I've ever heard in a rock band format. Normally, I keep good music to myself for fear of it being rejected but seeing as these are not the type of guys you'd find unless you were REALLY looking and as there always seems to be an ongoing debate on YC about the capacity and merit of rock music, I figured I should share these guys.

A few of their songs:

Explosions in the sky is alright... I'm a bigger fan of Don Caballero, since they are both more interesting musically and heavier, but they're not too concerned with soundscapes.

I find the post-rock genre appealing as well... are you familiar with Sigur Ros? A bit more mainstream I suppose... they have a vocalist, but he sings a fabricated language most of the time so it really just adds to the soundscape.
