I have been writing music for about 1 year now. Music is a love of mine. I am just looking for criticizm.. good or bad. Just tell me what you think of the song. And also if you could tell me what grade level piece do you think it is. as in 1-5

You can Also Talk to me on AIM or Yahoo at Svendiezl

If you want an MP3(better Quality sounds) just send me a message or email.

That bell is very annoying in MIDI... given a real performance I'm sure it wouldn't be as bad though. I also found that the ending was rather sudden and that some of your transitions were rough.

However, the piece was nice overall, with some fine melodies, but to be honest, I'm not sure that is was anything amazing. I see in this piece a composer who has the potential for great things in the near future... just stick with it!

What do you mean grade level? Performance? Or just a letter grade for the piece? If you want a letter grade I would give it a C. Performance level grade I have no idea.

Thank you cavatina for the critique.

I have plenty of other songs that I have written. I will post one every once and a while so I can see where my weaknesses and strenghts are.

Here is a Trombone trio that I wrote about 6 months ago.

Coshard.MID

Heh, you sure like your brass, don't cha? Unfortunately, most MIDI-synths don't share you affection, and emit crap whenever there's brass parts..... (except maybe for horns, but that's it). This piece sounds somewhat interesting, but it doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere before suddenly ending. You should also probably put each trombone part on a seperate track, and pan them out a little to give each more distinction and "room". But since this from 6 months ago, I assume that you've probably figured out multi-track sequencing ;). There were almost some very distracting dynamic changes, being rather inappropriately severe. But I guess since you've only composed for about an year, this isn't bad progress at all. Check out the other member's threads and maybe you can learn a thing or two from them (don't hesistate to critique them just because you are relatively new at composing; I'm sure most people here will value every comment they can get).

Yes I have figured out a little stuff about the MIDI. But that much. I only started putting this stuff on MIDI and MP3's recently. So I am fairly new at it. A little help would be fine with me. And I have never been critiqued or anything on my music. I am about to be in my junior year of High School, and this year they are going to have a music theor class. So when I am in there I will Probably be producing more music. And I really think this forum can help me alot along with the people in it.

Well with that said. I have a more recent piece that I have worked on. It is just a rough outline. Just simple piano solo. the chord changes and drum set part Are things that i will definitely work on. As they are just repetitive throughout the whole song. But here is what I have as of right now.

This sounds exactly like the pop song, "Time after Time"...

It's original. but some one did say it sounded a little like the song "we belong together". But yeah its completely original. Is there anything I could do with it?

Shadow - Some wierd harmonies and some rambling lines here and there, but it sounds good nonetheless. The ending is very abrupt and the whole pieces leaves me nothing. I can't quite grasp what you were trying to do with it...

Coshard - Hmm...sounds like Philip Glass, but you didn't stretch it out enough! It sounds like a Reader's Digest minimalistic piece, as you present material but do not get enough out of it. I think you should extend this one, as it sounds great so far! Just repeat more!! And that ending is just...rediculous!! ;)

Dawn of Spirit - A real cool funky piano song! Wowza, this one needs a vocal line and some nonsense lyrics. It also needs some work with the drum set and some rambling lines in the right hand piano part, but oh well. A lot of times your right hand line tends to go off and forgets about the rhythm and harmony of the piece, I think you should go back and restrict it a little more, create a melody of sorts. The drum part is wierd, as it comes and goes without warning! And each measure it sounds differnet...try examing some funk-pop-techno music like this, and reflect off their drum beats. You've inspired me to create my own song like this! :D

Shadow of A Mind is really good. there are some works that i know of that have a similar direction to them. this site si amazing: http://keypoulan.com/marching.html. he is the most amazing composer for theme music for high school bands. your music for shadow of a mind definately fits into this genre.

I think they're all pretty good. On Shadow and Coshard the endings are both very abrupt. On Shadow I think that in some places it is kind of choppy. I really like the Dawn of a Spirit one though. I think you're doing great. ;)

Oh wow... ! I had no idea this topic has gotten dug up to the top again. I posted these songs a long time ago. So I would say I have progressed as a composer since then a lot. I have a song up in the experimental section of the forums.. The topic is called The final Battle. I would appreciate it if you critiqued that song. Maybe even compare it to these.
