Concerto Grosso - A minor

Featured Replies

Here's a concerto I wrote last week. I didn't follow the strict rules of the Baroque movement, such as with modulation, etc., but it works. It's kinda like a Baroque Dream. It sounds Baroque but isn't true to the Baroque when it comes to form and such. Being I didn't follow the strict rules is the reason I was able to write it so quickly.

Let me know what you think of it.

Wonderful music, incorperates both baroque and romanticism/post-romanticism. But you should tag your music better: artist/composer name, genre and stuff like that. I'm definitely keeping these but I hate having music without the correct tagging :)

I think its really quite good. The melodies are terriffic and the movements are short and to the point--in those respects better than the master himself. I think the idea of combining post-Baroque ideas into music that has a structured form is good. If you just stick to the ideas of the Baroque then you are living in the past.

I hesitate to criticize a fine work like this, but I think we come to places like this looking for suggestions from others. In general you stick very close to A minor. The movements could vary in nearby keys (e.g. E minor, C major). You just need to begin and end with movements in A minor. Also, I would suggest putting more modulation in the individual movements, yours is more conservative than most Baroque music even. I liked the last movement less than the first four. I do like that it has some modulation in it, but the long stretches of repeated sixteenths in similar patterns lose a sense of rhythm that is a strength in most of the work. I would venture a similar criticism of Bach's longer works. Finally, I would suggest that you let some of the other instruments share in the fun. One of the big strengths of music written in the Baroque (counterpoint) era is that all of the musicians have something interesting to play.

All in all it was a great accomplishment for one week--definitely worth putting some more time in to improve it.

There's a nice lilting quality to the melodies of the first two that didn't reappear in any of the last three. The cycling through the fifths got a bit boring to my ears, maybe due to sticking to A minor.

But the first two I enjoyed much. Well done.

Would a suitable submission be an aria for soprano and orchestra;which is an excerpt from a larger work in g minor?

in regards to concerto grosso in a minor you might want to modulate one of the 2nd or 3rd movements into an appropriate key;A major,C major,G major, d minor...etc...

If the whole piece is in the same key;as a composer once told me;a piece will undoubtedly run the risk of being monotonous and the listener might get bored with it.

GOOD LUCK!

Okay, this was nice and refreshing. I'm impressed. A minor is one of those keys, so easy (what I really mean is fun) to compose in, but the thing you have to look out for is overdoing it with the sequences, and the circle of 5ths. Try to discipline yourself to use them sparingly, strategically, judiciously. By doing so, you'll maximize their effectiveness. The Venetian sequences should be handled like fine seasoning for food: excellent in the proper place and amount, but be careful to not pour too much on lest you spoil the meal.

That said, I agree that these are very diatonic-sounding pieces. Mine come out like this too, so I'm not knocking your compositional prowess. The second movement was particularly nice; certain passages took me back 20 years - back to when I was first discovering the sensualities of Locatelli. Thank you. I really don't believe in pedantics. I believe in creating evocative music, and usually one can accomplish this with simply composing from the harmony textbook found within the heart.

I think you found a portion of this book, and I think you did an admirable job here.

I agree with you completely and what you pointed out was what I knew would be pointed out before posting it. I love the sequences, as I am somewhat addicted to them as they give a certain thrill, but yes, they can be overdone and I over do them.

I really wasn't aiming at anything grand with this piece. I just wanted to throw a fair baroque sounding work together and I think I accomplished that during the week I wrote this. But as with anything what you put into it is what you may get out of it. My personal opinion of the work is that it's respectable and fun to listen to but nothing great.

Wow! I like these very much. The last one was a bit, how to say... I don't know. It was just as you took ideas from earlier movements - which is fine, but the end was just copied - and I think you could change it a bit.

But anyway, I like it! The first movement was, in my opinion, the best.

Good luck and keep uploading music :)

it's a splendid work, but it does lack some charachteristics that would make it more authentic. if you returned to the theme it would not only make the piece longer but it would also give the peice a format. it's like so many of vivaldi's works that were great but some of them were lacking the extra nuances that would make them great.

Wonderful composition, Jeremy. You have improved so much since the last time I had the opportunity to listen to your compositions. I am really impressed! The only thing I'd like to hear and I don't is more participation from the orchestra in the fast movements. I also like how all the movements seem to come and go... like short musical moments in time, silence and eternity.

This is good.

There's some room for tweaking, but overall, I think it's pretty good.

Thanks, Mark. I'm going to try to stay more simple until I have a better understanding. Grant had me working on some two part pieces in binary for some time and I learned a bit from that. I need to get back to doing that, even if it's only one piece a week.

I really like the initial thematic material. It's a bit quirky, but it still "fits" what you're aiming at.

I really like this piece. I think it is great. In fact, I think I would like to perform it if you don't mind. Could I possible get PDFs of the solo violin part? It is so wonderful. It would be amazing to play. Of course, not with your permission.
