Sonata Rondo for Two Pianos in G major

Featured Replies

Dear friends

Sonata Rondo for Two Pianos in G major is a work in the Sonata Rondo form. It resembles Mozart's and I hope you will like it. It took me about a month to compose it, and is considerably my first complete work. Any criticism will be most appreciated because I am here to learn! Enjoy!

Yours sincerely

WOW! That means a lot to me! Thank you very much! Yes, I understand the classical period can get a little predictable, but I am glad you liked it nonetheless! I am trying my hands on 20th century music for a change. Thank you for your time!

Dear palestrina64

I do not understand what you mean by "wrong doubling of chord tones, parallel 5th's/8ves". Could you point out which bar you are referring to? Thank you for being patient with me. :whistling:

The rondo is very light and airy. It is the one of the main advantages.

The next characteristic feature is untypical harmony in several places. (bars 74-90) This is not negative. It gives us a impression of modernity of that piece. But only 2% possesses this harmony.

Another, great advantage is presence of contrasts. You composed both major and minor themes, both places with bravura and simple fragments. I think, You will a great composer of classical variations. It is entertainment rondo, very pleasant. You should think about orchestration of this composition.

I wish You continuation Your music career with great effects.

He's talking about spots like in the 4th measure of your first page where your melody part goes from D up to A while the bassline goes from G up to D. Those 2 parts are moving in parallel 5ths which in Mozart's time would have been unacceptable. I'm sure there are others.....

What palestrina64 is getting at and or asking is how strongly you are trying to go for an "official" piece of music which follows the common practice theory rules of Mozart's time? In many places you real have the "sound" of Mozart and the classical era down with quality melodies etc. But if one is REALLY going for the attempt to write something "like Mozart" there's basic rules of composition which should be followed more closely.

But in the end its up to you to decide what your hopes and goals were for the piece. From a "common practice" theory perspective there are parts which could be tightened up and improved to follow more closely the Mozart way of composing, but in the end if you're happy with the piece as it is, I'd say move on and good job!

But:thumbsup: keep in mind that if and when you DO want to try to write something "just like" Mozart, there are a lot of rules of composition which will need to be followed :-)

Thank you for taking your time to criticize and correct my mistakes. I understand that there are some unnatural transitions to modernity for the sake of following the Sonata Rondo form (e.g. ending it in the dominant in bar from bar 64-76). I must admit that I was too fickle to randomly transit between different styles, and it must have been awful for the listener!

I am now trying my hands on more modern styles. However, I will still correct this piece and make it as prim and proper as possible. :)
