Good day.

I think you have some good stuff here. I'm not sure having a kit was the best option, though. I'm all for using traditionally rock/jazz instruments in a more classical setting, but I think it'll cause some real balancing problems in this piece. You'd either need an incredibly soft drummer (brushes) or having the other instruments amplified.

There are many bizarre problems with the score, but I'll assume that a good deal of them aren't your doing.

Anyway, though that did seem like reasonably negative feedback, I think you have some good material in there, which could become even better if you keep working with it. Rhythmically, it sounds very "Frank Zappa" to me, which is by no means a bad thing!

Keep working on it!

Michael.

The score is very strange for sure.

The music has some good moments with interesting rhythms. The intermittent percussion is problematic - it doesn't always work for me.

Maybe congas instead of a drum kit, and even add a xylophone - a couple of ideas that came to me as I listened - just suggestions.

The piece has possibilities.

I happen to like the percussion as I wrote. I do not personally adhere to tradtional type approachs to music such as this.

I do respect your take on it however.

Yes, concerning the notation....Why is it that the accidentals are on the opposite side of the note? How do I correct that?

Actually Frank Zappa is a huge influence for me. I've been a fan for 40 years!

Seen him perform five times. In my opinion, there is no better composer past or present...

Thank you...

I can't expect everything I write to work for everyone. That's not why I became a composer. I write music in how it stimulates me.

I'm not of the average age group, I assume, in this forum. I have been writing music for thirty years with over 400 pieces to my credit.

I simply place them here for the novelty of it. And also I have heard some pretty cool compositions as well.

Of course it's always cool to see how others hear it. It's actually a waste of energy to be in the process of writing and thinking how another may hear it.

It's an impossibility to determine.

I never approach composition in that way.

Good or bad, positive or negative responses are always interesting and always welcomed.

A composer must trust their own instincts without compromise.

Thank you Herb for your time...

Mike

I actually quite liked it. It's not my kind of instrumentation, but it sounds southing and well constructed. Maybe i'm a bit primed by your remark on how you only write for yourself, but it feels authentic. Nice piece. I can imaging how the drumpart is impossible to perform like this. Are you aiming for a performance when you write your music, or do you actually just like it like it is on mp3? This might sound judging, i mean it out of interest.

Thank you gijs....

I never have performance in mind when I write.

I write music because I find it to be a great hobby for myself.

I'm glad you enjoyed it...

Mike

it should sound nice with real (non-midi) instruments. it's pretty lyric and hectic at the same time. and it's good that i manage to find some humour in your music. it's a rare virtue for serious composers.

Weird, I was just posting on your experimental composition....

Pliorius, I'm so glad that you were able to understand the humor that I put into everything I write.

Not many, if none at all, indicate that humor when they listen to them.

My ending on this piece was incredibly sarcastic and cliche.

I may write for hobby, but yes, I am most serious about what I write about. I love this art form so much and have such utter respect for it.

There is no reason why as serious composers we cannot be comedians as well.

Thank you for being that open to my music my friend!

Mike

i , being not proffesional, have no other way to music, but just being open and going by intuition, and, firstly, the sound.

by knowing you were a fan of frank zappa, it was almost inevitable that your music will have a dose of humour.

actually, i use humour in so my much of my own stuff as well, and yes, like with charles chaplin, it is not contrary to seriousness in a true sense of this word.

wowwwww....I can't believe some of the criticism this has received. i actually think this is by far the most imaginative and most full of expertise piece I have heard here...The harmonic language combined with the drum set creates an exciting, accessible modern sounding piece. I think it would sound awesome with the woodwinds amplified.I would love to hear my schools contemporary ensemble perform this. I will check out more of your work as i think it is very interesting..and yes..the ending is comical

I cannot thank you enough benxiwf. It's really nice when someone feels what I feel about my work.

Everyone has their own tastes and background. It's a vast world of subjectivity out there.

Much appreciated!

Mike

Make sure you know how far a instrument can stretch, putting sixteenth notes varying in octaves and accidentals, is not a possibility and wouldn't be practical for any advanced player.

It sounded cool though.

You are absolutely correct.

Being that I do not write to have my work performed I have the liberty of over-doing the instuments, as well as the performers capabilities. A wonderful consolation of software.

Not worrying about performance potential allows a certain freedom of sound interval.

Also, the score I presented is void of necessary slurs, etc. I only presented it because it appears many composers prefer to see it.

I do not write music for the it's practicality. I only write music to please my ears.

By all means MathWizard, if indeed I did write something, in hopes of getting it performed, I would definitely concentrate on it's feasibilty.

Thank you kindly for the listen.

Mike

i think you should look into having a work performed. I would perform one of your works or organize an ensemble to play one of them at my university.
