Nocturne #3 in C# Minor (Lost Love)

Featured Replies

I use alot of chords in this piece, it can be considered a study on the chords in C# minor and E major. I usually avoid heavy usage of chords in my writing, so this is a new approach for me. The piece ends in E major.

This is called "lost love". It is a pretty sad piece.

Nocturne #3 in C# Minor

Enjoy.

Chopin,

I think that overall, compared to your other pieces, this is not your best work. The first minute or so feels like it just goes from one static chord to the next (this reappears later on in the piece). Then, what felt like random rhythmic motion appears, which I felt was somewhat out of place after hearing the static chord progressions. Throughout the piece, I never got a clear feel of any melody (which is fine by me if that is what you intended in the piece) but I think that the lyricism that you tried to purvey through the harmonic progressions could have benefited from a strong melodic line. In other words, this style of writing needs a clear melody in my opinion.

The piece does have many merits, as overall it accomplishes its larger goal of a "sad"/"Melancholy" feel, although even this I found was a bit shaky at times (again, I don't care personally about this, I am just basing my review on what I believe you attempted to convey with the piece).

Overall, I didn't enjoy this piece as much as your other pieces, but I do hear your personal compositional style clearly reflected, therefore in my mind the piece is a success. I'm sure it is very meaningful to you.

Thanks for the comments. I usually like to write fast music, but lately I am writing slow movements. I wanted to try something new.

This is the first time I wrote a piece using chord progressions like this. I just wanted to try it out. There are actually 3 themes in this piece...I know, hard to believe in only 4 minutes! This is a piece that has to be listened to closely I think, in order to pick them out. I foreshadow one of the dominant themes at 0:30.

In fact, all three themes are tied together at the end, starting at 3:44 to the finish.

I am really not qualified to comment on any of your music chopin  I am still very much a beginner! But I do know good music when I hear it, and I really enjoyed this piece. I agree with cavatina that it isn't the best I have heard from you, but it is still great!

I thoroughly enjoyed this piece. It is more texturally complex than your other pieces, I think. Almost bach like in parts. ::edit:: What I find interesting is that you set out to base your piece primarily on chord progressions and this paradoxically invited more vertical motion between the voices. Its kind of like the oracle from the matrix telling you what you need to hear and what you actually do ends up being better and/or not what you expected. ::edit::

I think you guys should give this another listen. I think chopin's work gets better with each one he makes. and cavatina, if you say devil's advocate again, you're getting hit.

Great work, chopin.

What I find truly remarkable about your work is that this is all midi controlled....it really sounds like a person playing.

This sounds influenced by more than just Chopin, though I know he is your main influence. It almost sounds like a Schumann miniature

I really want to hear this piece, but I'm at work. I'll make a point of listening to it when I get home late tonight.

Ah. This is a beautiful piece.

Like Cavatina, at first I found myself wondering how I felt about the seemingly static chords. But then I took a deep breath, left my work-world for a moment, and got into the mood of it, focusing on the harmonies (alternately rich and complex, then simple and straightforward), the unique changes and modulations, and most importantly the moving line flowing through it all, connecting everything.

I'm surprised you don't post more of your work, Mike. Yours is some of the better piano music here.

Thank you all.

I'm surprised you don't post more of your work, Mike. Yours is some of the better piano music here.

I may post one of my Ballades (much more complicated than the works I have been posting) in the Major works soon. I have to do some reprogramming though, as I composed these pieces awhile ago, and the "midi programming" skills I have today are much greator than the skills I possessed a few years ago.

I really liked this piece, and any seemingly 'static' chords didn't bother me at all. This piece was very calming, though not necessarily peaceful...

I'm still curious where all these so called static chords are in his composition. Sure there are some, but there are also many passages which appear to have 2 or 3 voices going. Am I downloading the right piece?

If you want people to take the time to review your works from now on, you should provide some explanation:

Rules for posting

HA! GOTCHA ;).

lol Letehn, but he did kinda have an explanation in the first post, just not a really long one ;)

Jen, he posted the message at people that have explainations the size of his. So Chopin, explain your piece ;)

ohhhh tisk tisk chopin ;) I should probably edit a lot of my own topics as to not be a hypocrite myself lol :)

ohmygawd!

i mean, wow. this composition is really conveys a sense of quiet despair, and i must say that i think that the chords, contrary to being static, add a certain depth of melancholy to the piece. And it really sounds like it is being played by a person, which makes it all the better.

why dont you publish your work, chopin? (yes, i know i am not qualified to say this)

yeah, im pretty sure that it is a real person playing =p

Hello Chopin. I have just finished listening to your nocturne and have begun listening to it again as it is hard to really obtain everything the music has to offer by only listening to it once.

Very romantic. Parts of it feel like rolling waves to me. Very relaxing and very enjoyable. I wouldn't say it is terribly deep but, does it really matter here?

My critisms :

The first thin is the lack of breath in the piece. It simply continues on and on. A couple parts make me feel like you should have ended the phrase. It is slightly unnerving for it to simply continue for ever. This piece is also more in a major key than a minor one. And also, maybe more of a definitive ending would have been better, but stil, very nice.

I think that's really about it.

I like it more than most of the stuff I have heard here. I am a big Chopin fan as well and am currently playing his fantasy-impromptu. Good job and congrats.

Heier.
