December 2, 200817 yr Hi guys- I just finished banging out the first draft of this piece and I wanted to see what you guys think of it. There are a few fairly awkward parts that I'll have to rewrite and I still have to add dynamics, articulations, and do major score cleanup work. My main concept for this piece was a very rhythmic and almost percussive use of the choir and individual sections. I realize that the tempo is fairly fast, but this piece is intended to be fairly challenging. I'm more worried about the percussive nature of the consonants than absolutely precise diction. Anyway...hope you enjoy!
December 2, 200817 yr I really like it, you might want to consider adding a piano part, it could just be doubling the choir. It would ensure a percussive sound, would also make it much easier to sing.
December 3, 200817 yr Author Thanks for the feedback! I'm kind of on the fence at this point about a piano part. I would ideally like it to be an unaccompanied piece, but I'll play around with a few things to see what I can do.
December 3, 200817 yr Sounds great Andy. Can I make one very small suggestion though? Starting at measure 117 you have a good opportunity to make a more contrapuntal texture out of the Tenors and Basses. I don't know how you came up with the two lines or if you're set on them at all, but I think you could make those two lines move in contrary motion (Basses "up", Tenors "down") for a really neat affect. Then, at 121 you might want to consider having harmonized motion in the men's voices through 122. It makes the unison motion in 123 more prepared. When I heard the unison at 121 it felt "wrong" to me, so I thought this might help. Great job, though. I'm digging the pulsation and really enjoyed the piece overall.
December 13, 200817 yr Author I see what you mean, that was one of the places that I felt I would have to alter in the next draft of the piece. Thanks for the feedback! Anybody else?
April 21, 200917 yr Author Bumping this up out of obscurity to see if anyone else has anything to say about it.
April 25, 200917 yr Hi, just a bit worried that there are no obvious places to breathe in those veeery long rhythmic passages...
