How to study the score

Featured Replies

I would be very thankful if you shared with me some of your methods of studying the scores, tips, tricks, little stuff you pay attention to whereas others do not...

We have a thread about which scores to study and it's going quite well, I hope this one will follow in a similar vein.

Listen, listen, listen, and then listen some more. The greatest way to understand music is to hear it. that seems kind of self-evident, and it sort of is; but you can't underestimate to power of "oh that sounds cool, I wonder how he did it." Looking at Crumb scores before you hear the piece is an exercise in futility, except to marvel at his weirdness.

Studying scores is an important, but I feel secondary part of active listening.

1. look at a note

2. ask yourself: "why is it there? what would happen if it isnt there? what effect does it have on the rest of the piece?"

3. move on to the next note.
