The Nine to Five is a program piece written for Clarinet in Bb and Bassoon. The composition is focused around an aural representation of working a tedious and mundane day job at an assembly line-esque factory. Repetitive driving rhythms flirting with minimalism open the piece to exemplify the unheard music shadowing the daily routine of an average employee in said profession. (intensely) The piece then unfolds in to the tension of driving home at rush hour, (driving) to finally getting home. (emotionally) The day unfolds and the mood calms as the first movement comes to an end. (romantically) The second movement opens with an alarm clock, followed by the individual hitting the snooze button, (annoyingly) only to repeat the same daily routine. The second movement, however, is focused on payday. The lethargic drive to work becomes more congested and stressful as the individual nears the factory. (grueling) However, as it
