My 1st Orchestra ~ Hope

Featured Replies

This is my first orchestration...

That's why it's really simple and perhaps has a lot of mistakes...

You can listen and look at the score (I attach it)...

And please give me some comments, advice, critics, etc...

(*because this is my first one, I guess it'd be full of critics) :P

Sorry because the volume is too small...

I really appreciate it...

Thanks everyone... :)

I like it!

For a first orchestration it's very good I think, but there are just some things I can point out:

1: I think you are overusing the string tremolos. Some tremolo is okey, if you want the effect, but the ears (and probably the string players' hands) will get tired of it. I think you could do without the tremolo on those long pianissimo notes.

2: I'm note 100 % sure about the trumpet register, but telling the trumpet to go up to C#6 (and starting at B5, without having played anything earlier in the piece) is somewhat risky. It might sound a bit like the trumpetist is struggling to reach the note, but again, I'm not 100 % sure.

3: Your good at using the flute, oboe and clarinet for the melody (I like that, but only because I'm an oboist myself, and I like to play the melody). Put the melody in different places! Try putting it in the brass! (and not only the french horn) A trumpet can play a beautiful melody if it's in the middle register. A trombone can also. I also personally love the sound of a bassoon playing a melody in its upper register (between G3 and G4), but it will sound somewhat weak, so you'll have to orchestrate with that in mind.

I love the fact that you're writing solistically for the harp! Too many composers put a harp in their orchestra without letting it be heard properly.

Go on orchestrating!

the melody are very touching me

it look like the theme of the neverending story

and it look like soundtrack

i love it

it made it cry

hmm, I love woodwind too actually, that's why I use them a lot in the melody part. the other reason is: in this song, which the feeling is slow/ mellow, I think it's better use woodwind. that's why I use woodwind. but I'll try using the brass...

btw, because this is my first time, I'm not really sure about the exact capability, etc. of the real person in the orchestra. that's why perhaps I over-use tremolo in strings section, trumpet register, etc. I really appreciate your opinion about this matter...

and yes, I think this song sounds like a soundtrack...

once again, thanx... :)

Eirik is right the tremolo in the strings is too much. Are you sure you wanted them playing tremolos and not using vibrato?

well yeah, perhaps I'm confused about those two...

well, I've changed the score...

I've changed the trumpet register (actually I exchange it with trombone), strings part, and added a few timpani part...

A general idea on composing/orchestrating, when you want to achieve something, like melancholy, you really know how you want do write it, e.g. by using woodwinds. Then, I want you (and all composers) to ask yourself: "Can I do the same thing in a different, perhaps untraditional, and interesting way?"

I don't think The Rite of Spring would have been just as exciting if Stravinskij opened it with a clarinet solo :P

  • Author

hmm, i see what you mean...

in The Rite of Spring, he used fagot, then cornet, then clarinet if i'm not mistaken right?

i'll keep that in mind... thanx

You are really good in creating sweet melodies. Nice job.

One thing springs to mind: slurs. When notes for a string instrument are slurred, you must play them in one bow. Likewise, slurred notes for winds mean the player has to play them in one breath, without articulating using his tongue. A few slurs seem too long to accomodate the player's lung capacity/bow length. The last thing you want to do during a concert is run off the edge of your bow or clip your string at the end during a down bow, resulting in a noisy pluck and the player's string untuning. Trust me, it HAS already hapenned to me. For a wind player, running out of breath results in an unstable, "unsafe" sound, and possibly involuntary pitch changes. Try reducing the length or your slurs, it won't affect the sound or the music, and it'll make the piece a bit more easy on the bows/lungs. The rest is very nice, I like the sound and the effect it has on the listener.

i see... can u give me an example about this matter (on my piece)?

~ 'coz i can't play strings nor wind instrument so, well, yes, i'd expect a lot of mistajke from this matter...

thanx...

Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been away...

Anyway, about the slurs, take measure #3 as an example. The oboe has E dotted quarter-note. D eigth note, D half note. Slurred, the player would interpret it as E dotted quarter-note, and hold D for the rest of the measure, without articulating the eight/half note rythm. Something similar happens in measure #5. The slurs are also too long in some places, such as measures 6-9. It's a bit of a stretch for the player's lungs. And when a player runs out of breath, the sound starts to waver in pitch and intensity and its quality degrades. The string slurs are very long as well. Measures 18-19 for the violin are a bit too long for one bowing. You might want to break it up a bit. It happens a few times throughout the piece, you might want to check.

this sounds really good imo.

it was , to me, relaxing.
