Sonatina alla mozart

Was trying to make somthing that sounds like Mozart but it ended up sounding like Bach, but that's all right because what I'm really trying to do is something short but solid like a little diamond (Mozart and Bach are perfect examples of that)

I liked it a lot, especially the modulations.

From a notation point of view, the things I would change are:

1. Anacrusis (up-beat) at the beginning instead of a two beat rest, which should be (from a grouping, common-practise point of view) two crotchet rests instead of a minim rest: 3/4 time, and then either just a minim at the end; or a dotted minim tied to a minim.

2. Stems: Measure 2, beat 3, both hands; and measure 6, beat 1, right hand. (Measure numbers will change if you change your first measure into an up-beat)

3. Grouping at measure 5. I think the effect you're trying to produce would be better suited to phrasing rather than strange grouping.

Hi jsoldi - good job, i like it! Did you perform this yourself, because the performance is very good too :)

One thing that I would recommend considering is making the progression in bars 9-10 B minor-E minor (and then C on the third beat), which would be more satisfying (to my ear) and fits the following passage as well.

wayne-scales: you're right, I just fixed the score (except the anacrusis thing cause I'm not sure how to do that on Cubase) and added some phrasing. Here's the link.

No, that's not what I meant. See what you did was this (resize the image obviously):

What's wrong with that is the grouping of two quavers, one single quaver, two quavers, and one single quaver. If I understand the effect you're trying to create, it would be better notated like this (resize again):

wayne-scales: LOL. I know what you meant I just missed it again I think Cubase keep doing that every time I open the file or something. The phrasing should be just the way I did in on the "fixed" version. I'll upload a fixed one later cause I also want to change a couple of things on the piece.

My only question is whether there's a reason on the 2nd beat of the first full measure (and the others like it later) to not have it be the E and the G above to show the resolution of the 2nd to the 3rd which the ear assumes to be there? It probably wouldn't change the sound of it that much, but look just a teeney more legit....

Oh, and actually it sounds nothing like Bach. Its very classical. Remember there's LOTS of classical era composers who also don't sound like Mozart either :-)

Well, is a way of accentuating the 1st and 3rd beats. It gives a jumpy thing to it. If you hear my playing but specially if you play it you will know what I mean. Actually, I just tryed it the other way and noticed that accentuating the 1st and 3rd beats and then the 1st at the next measure is a motif or rhythmic pattern on the whole piece.

Yeah, maybe.... The other way to accent it like you mention is just to accent it by how you play it :-) I'm mostly thinking of it from the "theoretical" sense, in that you really did a good job writing something in a pretty convincing style so you could if you wanted go that one teeney step further and make it look as authentic as it sounds. But really it works either way.

After thinking about what or who it sounds like, what comes to mind to me are Beethoven's bagatelles....
