Zsofesz - for flute and percussion

Zsofesz - for flute and percussion

First of all, about the title: Zsofesz is senseless in every languages. 'Zsofesz' is my flutist friend's nickname, I wrote this piece to her. 'fesz' is Fflat in hungarian, so the most common note in the piece is Fflat.

It was written in the second part of the year 2008.

Program and analysis: The piece (almost) has a structure like a rondo. The Dflat-Fflat always come back, and this sound-happening is the rondo-theme. After the first theme, the flute starts to travel through an interesting world. There are a lot of interesting things in this world, so there are a lot of different themes and grotesque melodies. In the end of the piece, there is a sacrificial theme with a Presto furioso tempo mark. Here, the flute's travelling ends.

In the sacrificial part, there is an quote from the Fur Elise, with grotesque accents. I loved her for years although we were just friends for all the time.

About the score: it's in Hungarian and Italian language. On the second page, you can see the list of the percussion instruments (bongo, conga, woodblack, piano, grancassa), and the explanation of the signs. The first is the tounge pizzicato, the second means "to hit the key on the flute" (klapni in hungarian) and the third is "to sing in the flute").

I hope you like it :) Please write comments! :P I'm interested in your opinion.

Great piece! I especially loved the "sacrificial'' part at the end, the bass drum ostinato was really great. One thing that I would have liked to see is more use of percussion, perhaps a little percussion solo part or more interesting rhythms. The middle part in the flute reminded me a lot of Syrinx, btw! And I was gonna ask about the Fb notation, but I guess the name of the piece explains that, haha.

Wow. I really like it! However, as a flutist, I'm kind of puzzled at the extended technique you used...I think there were some key clicks and some singing, right? (meas. 14, I was kind of wondering how those key clicks are executed, because playing an A and fingering those notes produces...well, those notes. ><) It's really really really good, but I think if you had a sort of "glossary" of the extended techniques, it would help a lot in execution. :)

Good job!

Well, the percussive effect is more important then that sound. And these are really short notes, so the audition will here an A with something which is unrecognizable :) It should be practised :) Thank you

it look like angel voice of children

good music

interesting piece, very raw, yet gentle, interisting rhythmics, in a sense they make feel fluteman traveling somewhere, or maybe like some sort of buddist mantra.

Well, I always write music with these rhythms, if it's a fast movement :) In the slow movements, I use "sound-dollop".

I think it works! Have you checked Sariaaho's Noa Noa ? Good notation for some of the special effects...

I adore Saariaho!
