Posting another piece for review: "when god lets my body be"

Featured Replies

So I'm posting the first song from my five song cycle titled God(Love) Songs. The songs are all settings of e.e. cummings poems, revolving around the interplay of love and faith. They were written with a mezzo in mind and for either piano or harp. The poems each involve faith and love in some way, and how the two concepts are so similar. I went for a really simple tonal pattern, something singable and beautiful. The accompaniment is sparse, just lightly playing with melody, I want the feelings of each piece to be introspective and wistful. I'm hoping I accomplish that.

Hey just listened to your piece.

I thought the main vocal melody was really beautiful and i think you definitely achieved that wistful atmosphere that you said you wanted to create. I also like your creative use of harmonies.

My main criticism would be the piano writing. Some of the left hand passages seem a bit odd like in bar 15 with the thirds, it might just be me but it's just not what I'd expect to see in a piano accompaniment part. LIkewise the moving triads at bar 38 don't really work that well. There also quite a few moments where the piano copies the rhythm of the vocal part where i don't think should.

On the whole though it's pretty good, nice work. :)

Yeah, you can definitely tell I come from a singing, rather than accompanying, background. I'm still relatively new to writing for piano, and I know it shows. I also wrote this cycle with the harp in mind as well, as a different sort of feel (it fits into the the love/faith thing well).
