Magnetic Soul

Featured Replies

Here's a new piece I recently churned out. Its for solo Alto Sax and piano. It loosely follows a ternary form. From the conception of the piece, I knew I wanted something a little more dissonant and more jazz influence than some of my other pieces. From there I relied on the blues and octatonic scale for a lot of my melodic materials.

The title comes from a phrase that developed in the history of magnetism. In an attempt to give reason to the fact that the earth was magnetic, it was proclaimed to have a "magnetic soul"

This was, frankly, just too awesome of a title to pass up. Although the piece is not intended to be programmatic, you are welcome to draw from it what you like.

Well, I don't have much else to say.

Enjoy!

The only criticism I have is that the piece feels sort of disjointed, lots of little sections, but without any common ground, except a few themes brought back after a minute or so. Other than that I like the harmonies, very interesting choices.

Thank you for the comments!

Yeah, I do have to admit that some of the sections are a little disjointed from the rest of the piece. I wish I could've fixed that before I sent it in to a contest....

Oh well :D

Thanks!

This is a very nice piece. The only criticism I have is that on the score there are a couple collissions, specifically on page 11 measure 76 the...urgh this is the problem with being an inexperienced composer...the ummm squiggly line thing (I feel so embarrassed :-/) collides with the notes and in measure 101 the triplet number (the actual number I mean) collides with the crescendo. There are some others, but those are the ones I noticed the most.

Very nice though, I liked it a lot. It had a nice jazzy feel at some points.

Hope you do well in the contest.

I really enjoy it. Cool name too. Magnetic Soul has a real ring to it. There are, as previously stated, some abrupt changes. I would smooth these changes with transitions using previously stated material, from farther back in the piece, as to give the whole piece a greater sense of unity.

Even without those changes though, I really do enjoy this.

This was a cool piece, and like note360 said I like this title, it's pretty snazzy :P I can't really criticize it other than the things they've said above...
