Fugue in B minor

Featured Replies

.... Wow it's been a long time since I've posted anything. Well... for the YC 24 fugues/preludes.. whatever thing, I wrote a fugue, and my key was B minor. Keys really don't matter to me, but B minor always sounds special to me when I hear it.

Anyway, this is a pretty straightforward fugue except for the subject starts on the 2nd of the scale, implying a different mode until the 2nd measure, when the characteristic flattened notes are revealed, giving way to B minor by the end of the 3rd measure.

B minor - D major - A minor - E minor - B minor

is the overall tonal framework. Pretty simple. Other keys are touched upon in modulatory episodes.

That's enough of me talking, please enjoy it :)

(and do point out things that you feel would make it better, thank you!)

I really liked the fugue, you have dealt very well with the material and also the theme is quite catchy.

but I noticed that in some places the voices are too far from one another to be easily played.. but it is something that you (the player) can overcome with practice.

Anyway I really like this work as also I enjoy listening to your other works on here :)

do you have a prelude to go with this fugue??

Thanks for the comments, Guglielmo!

This is true, the voices are quite far away from each other in parts of the fugue, but that is because I originally intended to write just a fugue.. not a fugue for piano. It still is playable, though, just not instantaneously.. and this can be found in some of Bach's fugues for solo instruments (like violin and violoncello).

Yes, there is meant to be a prelude, but writing the prelude is extremely difficult and I have to find a good way to transfer my piano improvisations onto paper.

I enjoy listening to your works too! :)

Hey Mael! I have never done anything with Fugues before, so I can't really make comment on it, just wanted to say I enjoyed listening :) The Euphonium Concerto is very good, I especially loved the opening. The ending was kind of strange tho, maybe it was an error in the midi... is it supposed to cut off suddenly at 3:28?

Nice work :D

Hey Leigh :)

Thanks for commenting! Yup, fugues are only technical when you know about them... otherwise it's just like any other music :) I just tried to be ultra-traditional in the fugue.

Haha, the Euphonium concerto, now, is a commission by a Euphonium player who wanted me to write a cello concerto, so that's a work in progress for me and I just needed a place to upload it.. 3:28 is where I stopped working :P. I'm glad you like it though! I hope it can turn into something special.

Thanks!

hey!! :D

wonderful the euphonium file!

I really liked it, it is intense and with fire. very good music, and you MUST finish it!

HEy Mael - the fugue is well done - I am glad you adhered to the rules much more. Yeah the spacing is wide but it'd work on an organ. In fact this fugue is much more suitable for an organ - esp the low bass tones would really resound and sustain while the counterpoint goes above it ... pester me to print it out and record it before the summer.

I think I'll hold off commenting on the concerto only because it is much too early to say anything. Overall sounds good.

I listened to both the fugue and the concerto, and I liked them both. Technically, I don't know enough about music to give a comfortable critique of anything, except that you need to finish that concerto and you need a prelude for you fugue.

Haha, thanks for commenting all of you!

Punkitititi - I'm glad that you like the concerto and I will agree with you that there's a lot of passion in it! As soon as I am finished with it, I'll be sure to post a recording of me playing it (piano) with either the Euphonium player or the cello player. I'm trying to finish it! :P

Comp - It's quite a relief to hear that I did a good fugue.. especially from you! When I played it on the piano, the rolls really don't affect the voices/performance too much and since I'm able to re-tune the digital piano at my house, I could make the bass sound less muddy, but I could write a copy for organ and give it to you!

No One Else - Thanks for the comments :) , it's really slow work on the concerto, especially since I am JUST getting to the meat of things now (the development section). The prelude... ahhhh I can improvise better preludes than I can write. Getting it on paper will be the hardest part.

Thanks again for the comments :) ... (I should make a thread separately for the concerto, I suppose....)

and here is fugueinBminor.mp3 with the tempo at 85 as per the sheet

I liked it

It would be a genuine Bach-like fugue if you can just complicate or intricate measures 22,38, & 54! Otherwise, very good!
