In Pursuit, for wind ensemble

Featured Replies

Hello,

I was recently out of the country for several months in a study abroad program. While the melodies in this piece don't necessarily have anything to do with the places I was at, they were all created as I was wandering around new territory, "In Pursuit" of anything and everything that each exciting spot of the world provided. This is my first work for a large ensemble. Please examine the score, notice the percussion playback is rather incorrect.

Thanks, in one of your previous posts you mention that you composed a lot for winds..Did you notice any specific problems?

Ben

First off let me say that I liked this piece. I will qualify everything I say from now on is based on not knowing a lot about Band pieces. It just seems to me that a piece like this would be served better if done by an Orchestra. Perhaps if you arranged it for orchestra, you would like it better. I miss the strings that could really bring out a lot of your ideas in this. Again. I know little about bands but it seems with the great use of dynamics in this, they would be lost if played outdoors on some field.

Do you have a mp3 of this with better samples? I had to use notepad to open this and the samples in notepad are not the best, which brings me to my final point.

You have talent and in today's world that is not enough. It helps your music a lot if you present it in the best manner that's possible. That means better samples, learning how to use a sequencer/DAW and spending money which we usually don't have. But in the long run, if you want music to be your career, the money spent is worth it.

well done

Thanks Ron,

I may go ahead and orchestrate it for orchestra at some point, but for now, I actually plan on having the piece performed by real musicians. I don't really ever see it as a marching band work, but more of a concert work. I would like to get some better sound files. Right now I only have the Garritan samples from Finale which I normally don't even use because of how slow they run on my computer. However, like I said, I am really interested in having my piece performed by real musicians and think that I will have the opportunity soon. Thanks for your comments!

I really enjoy this, so make sure there's a recording, even if it's just someone's digital camera on youtube.
