String Quartet No.3 in C minor

Featured Replies

I really was sketch about posting this considering its not of significant lenght, but anyway....I'm writing a little string quartet for my school quartet to play. They are not the best, so I was limited on the difficulty of the work. Since it is four movements and to be played at a concert, I am making it almost "miniature" if you will. The first movement is only about 3:14. It took me about 3-4 days to write, working on it for about 15 minutes at a time. I have been editing the crap outta my symphony, so it didn't leave much time for extra composing! The rest of the movements will be longer, but I just didn't feel the need to add anything more (material wise) to the 1st movement.

Anyway, hope you like it!

Great Job!! :) This is a really cool piece! Its not your best, but its still good. I think it ends a little suddenly. You should build up to it a bit more. Other than that, its a great piece! (Btw, post one of your other piano concerti!! No. 4 is AWESOME!!!!!! :w00t: (I think its 4. Whichever one is the E Major one. Oh, and the A major one is great too ;) )

Good job!

very nice job! lovely classical feel!

I Think one of the main problems I noticed was a lack of smooth movement between material. I think some of your voicing could be improved. I am aware not all your voices just moved up and down at the same time, but it gave the effect that it did. Whenever, that happens, it gives an awkwardness to your piece. At momements the shift seemed a little bit to quick. For example, when you wrote legato, I think something leading into that area would have served you a bit better. Also. your piece didn't do much for me. This is not to say it wasn't good, because it was a good piece but I didn't feel anything. You had dynamics but yet the piece felt monotone. It think building more tension and releasing would be helpful.

Edit-i'm now more sober

Hey Evan. Just been listening through. Have to say you've come on leaps and bounds since I listened to your work, must have a been a few months ago! Very Mozart sounding, very! Like you flicking between major and minor though some of the repeats I felt were a bit too boring, hearing the same material again though that's how some composers deal (and survive, just look at any Haydn Symphony and you're sure to play the same stuff twice over). Some of the cello and viola line with the quavers can get very boring though if it's in the classical style, I guess I'm gonna have to put up with it :D!

Good use of dynamics and such though there were a few places where I was a bit unsure of your markings. Maybe have a look through, especially fp's and sffz and the like. Just need polishing off.

Apart from that, a very good start to what seems is going to be a very promising quartet. Well done!

Woot! Intermediate Composer now, going up in the world! :D

Thanks a lot. The quartet has the music to this now, and we had one short rehearsal. I'm hoping to get 1-2 rehearsals in over spring break (this next week), so things are brightening up for me. I'll check over those markings when I get a chance.

Fantastic. Dig on any Mozart? Particularly the 40th symphony? Themes obviously are nowhere near exactly the same, but this reminds me of one of the movements.

I actually am not familiar with many of Mozart's symphonies... a shame, really. I particularily like his earlier ones (from those that I HAVE heard).

Beethoven was an influence for this piece.
