My Cozy Jazzballad! - Virtual Baritone Sax

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

This is a little jazz ballad I made for school. I decided to record it directly in Cubase so there's no sheet music for the melody.

I made it using:

  • Addictive Drums
  • The subtone baritone synth from SaxLab 2
  • Art Vista Virtual Piano
  • My own Squier Fretless bass.

The mixing isn't that good yet but it's good enough to listen to.

Here's the chords:

In the recording I play 1 head chorus, 1 solo chorus and 1 head out.

My piano voicing and bass walking vocabulary aren't very developed yet, so that's why I don't vary myself very much.

EDIT: NEW VERSION

Now with a bass solo and a slightly better mix.

Oh yeah, I also changed the end chord from a CMajor7 to a C13(#11)

Nice!

It was a pleasure to listen to and I'm glad that you repeated your head as many times as you did because I felt like it could have used a lot of development.. Sounds like a song too because of it. Now, your saxophone sounds are pretty bad, though.. and saxophones don't generally sound like that.. unless you are looking at first year students.

I like the chords. They speak just as much as the melody. Pretty interesting too.

One thing you can work on, though, is not having your piano play notes every time the chords change or you want syncopation... you should give the piano player more freedom as to coming up with short licks while the saxophone isn't playing.. but the sax is playing for like.. the whole thing :P . Same idea with your bass.

Pleasure to listen to!

The sax tone I was aiming at was something like this:

YouTube - Gerry Mulligan - Moonlight In Vermont - 1959

And I think it comes pretty close. Not near, but not far from. ;) For being a synth.

But thanks for the suggestions and I'm glad you liked it. :)

I'm not sure if I like the quick jumps in the head, but I feel that's more the synth... something's weird there.

I really liked the bass-sax harmony in the head -- it was a nice little touch.

A few more breaks for piano and bass solos would have been nice.

yeah, it would sound better with a real player.

Where?

I might do that later on. I recorded one solo just to showcase the tune. ;)

sending me to sleep it's so relaxing! (almost 1AM here in england T.T)

v.nice.... I bet this would sound fantastic live with a bit of reverb.....

would have loved a break for a drum solo to spice things up. (same for bass, piano etc.)

lovely riff on sax.

end would be interesting to play! Very nice sound in general, good mood.

p.s. if you ever need anyone to record it I'm sure me and my band could find the time if you send us the music =)

Oh yeah this is very nice indeed :)

I wish I could get my stuff sounding like this.

Per your request, I gave it another listen - It's a cool tune.

The bari solo falls prey to weird feel ... the time is a bit wonky and the feel isn't quite right . It gets better for the bass solo - presumably because you're actually playing it ;)

It's still a little iffy in some spots - something that comes with the territory of being relatively new as in jazz. Feel can't be taught...or even learned. It'll evolve along with you as a player.

keep it up!

Nice, retro, smokey-nightclub feel. Made me want to watch a Woody Allen film.
